Rust: PvP sandbox in the purest, most hardcore form

I can't believe someone made this game: Rust (early access on Steam, US$19.99).

Yes, it's in "alpha" but the core sandbox gameplay is there, and it's compelling. Like EVE. :) But it's only been in development for about 5 months. You are naked and alone, with only a rock, some bandages and a torch. You are hungry and cold. You need food and shelter. With these meager tools, you must survive and somehow carve out a living in a hostile wilderness, where other people who started alone and naked are also trying to survive.

So, you bash a tree with the rock, and get some wood. Bash a boulder with the rock, and get some stone. With the stone and the wood, you can craft a stone handaxe, which is much better at harvesting wood and stone than the rock.

Sneak up on a wild boar, or a deer, and kill it with the stone hatchet. Harvest the raw materials, and you can now cook and eat the meat, and make clothing to ward off the cold. Harvest some more wood, stone and cloth and you can build a shelter, a hunting bow, and some arrows.

That is, unless somebody else finds you and wants what you have gathered. Or maybe they are just a psychopath. Does it really matter? You're dead either way. Unless you kill them first.

Rust has everything the hardcore EVE PVPer has asked for in this game. Mods and plugins can, however, change these features, but "out of the box" the game is as hardcore as anything.

No local chat. No one's presence on the server is known unless they choose to reveal it. There's voice chat, but only players standing next to each other can hear it.

There's no map, no compass, no navigation aids at all. You have to learn the landmarks, and use the sun and moon to determine the compass directions.

Your character persists in the game after you log out. You have to find a safe place to log out, either well-hidden, or within the fortress you have built for yourself.

When you die, all your inventory drops, free for the taking. If you were murdered by another player, well, they have all your stuff. If you were killed by wildlife, you might find your loot drop, but it's hard. The grass is tall and you dropped your loot among hostile wildlife.

You can, of course, make friends and cooperate. There's safety in numbers. But the game doesn't "enforce" friendships in any way. There's no "blues" and "reds" no way to mark friend or foe, no wardecs.

Your character has no skills, no perks, and no attributes except for health, hunger, and irradiation. You can find blueprints for better equipment, and studying them is the only way your character "advances" in any sort of RPG fashion. The crafting you learn is the only thing that persists through death. Ann you can immediately use anything you craft or find, without training or skilling up.

The conception of this game is flawless. The implentation is, at this early stage, very solid. All that remains is to balance it and flesh out the graphics and items, and expand the game world to the entire map. I'm thinking about renting a server of my own.

Sounds interesting. An MMO called Xsyon has pretty much the same concept. It's been around over three years I guess, and should be fairly well-tuned by now. Really beautiful graphics. But they when they did their big publicity push and released it, it was still buggy. Hordes of players (including a Pandemic Legion group) joined, got frustrated with the bugs, and quit. Seems the game never recovered and player population is still low. But it's free to play, and again, such beautiful graphics that it's worth checking out.

A buddy told me about RUST. His words were "Hey UaE, youre a twisted ****, check out RUST, youll love it!". This immeadiately made me curious enough to watch some videos and read some guides on it. Interesting concept, I shall try it.

My first few minutes playing RUST were...eventful. Within 5 minutes, I watched a naked man with a rock beat another naked man with a rock and run off.

This...this is the game for me. I thought.

5 minutes later, a nice stranger walked up to me. "Hey buddy, want a hatchet?". He said quietly. "Sure! Thanks!" I said, sounding naïve while completely expecting a trap. Within seconds I found myself boxed in with walls. Que maniacal laughter on the other guys part. Yep, this IS the game for me.

After dying from hunger, I awoke naked with a rock. THis ironically has actually happened in RL a few times...alcohol was involved. I didn't die, but I wish I had. Hangovers. Anyways, being new, and having played Eve for entirely too long, I decided that I was going to find this man, and take his stuff.

I ran around until I found him. I stalked him for over an hour. During this time I crafted a bow and arrows, and a stone hatchet. I noticed that at times he would stand still for about 5 minutes. I waited. Soon enough..he stopped..standing near a tree. I snuck up behind him...and shot him in the head with an arrow...twice..three times..finally he died. I took everything he had. His pickaxe, his Leathers, all his food, 45 wood planks, and his 9mm pistol. Heh.

My victory was short lived, for 30 minutes later I was viciously shot dead by a three man gang. Again I awoke naked in a field. Tonight, I hunt them.

This..this is the game for me.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

I actually had a group of friends playing this and had went and got my own server

Xovonia - [features] should be on the second to last page of modded server listings.

It'd be cool if I can get it running active again :3

The DayZ standalone is pretty similar judging by the Steam reviews, and what my brother and his friends say.

Actual reviews, not images of them, are here

Says it all really.

As UAE above says, Rust certainly sounds like a game that Eve players will enjoy.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Your tale moved me to thought patterns that make me want to play it more than OP´s original post.

Naked men killing other naked men with rocks is so ... enticing, yes of course, pistols, bows, knives, machetes ... but a rock.?

That´s like watching the "monkey" throw the Femur in the air before it converts into a more complex machine in space

this review of rust has me intrigued lol

Quote:
I love this game, I built a house around a guys house and made him my prisoner, I fed him cans of tuna and cooked chicken when it was available, and some times I would drop in spare logs of wood(when they were available). The best part. he talks to me, keeps telling me his clans going to raid my structure and save him.. I simply respond with .” It puts the lotion on its skin, or it gets the hose again” and by hose I mean I dump charcoal on him.

So a friend linked me to a friend of there's that was streaming themselves playing Slender. This guy wasn't having a good time of it and barely survived getting all pages both virtually and literally. He was all shaken to hell.

Then some of the stream viewers start mentioning Rust and he says that he played it once some time ago but never got very far with it. We egg him on saying that there's been updates and that he can play on my server.

He hops in and quickly makes his way to building a shelter and such.

Amazingly he happened to set up not far from where I was. I find his shack and kinda wander around it. As it so happened he was out collecting more stuff and died to an animal or radiation or something; he didn't hear me in the grass walking up to his shack cause he respawned after I had already gotten there.

I waited until he was hunkered down, cooking chicken or w/e.

Pulled out my shotgun....

....oh btw this was in the middle of the night....

...and fired several shots into the air right next to his walls

I got this game about a week ago. My daughter was watching me play, and so, I got her a copy. We are an unbeatable team of cowards. Will, not cowards really, but we do fade away at the first hint of potentially real trouble.

I have to agree with most of what UaE said about it. This is the game for me.

It's still early alpha, and so, many things are likely to change.

It appears there are a few psychopaths on the server I play on. A couple of them will kill you as much as look at you. Even if you have nothing. I've learned that just because someone looks like they have nothing, does not mean they don't have a shotgun hidden. I now treat everyone I don't know as potentially dangerous, unless proven otherwise. I've even taken out a few naked people. Not so much that I thought they were dangerous, but after telling them to go away or I'll shoot, they became more annoying, and so, I killed them.

I did make a few friends on my server, but one of these bastards shot me in the head. Unfortunately for them, I had the foresight to put all my good stuff in storage before I went outside of my base to meet with them. This happens a bit more then I would like to admit.

Waking up with nothing more then a rock, 2 bandages, and a torch to my name have been quite common. Until I figured out that a shelter of some sort is highly beneficial and a sleeping bag in that shelter as a respawn point.

Surrender is still your slightly less painful option.

Never trust a naked man, ESPECIALLY IN RUST.

Naked people concealing a pipe shotgun is common.... too common.

Dat pipe shotgun damage though.... WOW.

I love my rock........ I used mine earlier to bash a sleeping nake. Took all his stuff, a rock, 2 bandages, and a torch.

Felt so bad about it later, that I jumped off the tallest rock I could find. Broke my leg on the fall. Limped to another rock, and jumped again. Had a nice little collection of stuff that I hope the next nake guy can use.

Surrender is still your slightly less painful option.
