My adventures in Theme-park mmo

SWTOR was the first mmo I played for long time and I had long love\hate relationship with it.
When it was released and I first got it they published it will mainly be story driven mmo and the class you'll pick will get additional chapters of the story all and all with co-op mode in between.

Love or hate it Bioware knew how to make a story and anyone which played KOTOR 1 \ 2 loved the idea.

So I played a bit getting max level in first month of sub then finishing the whole content of the game in 2 months or so (with my first character, game is somewhat linear and content means story and quests which u can do once).

Then in order to experience the other 7 classes in the game, back then, I had to level the new once to 50 again and do same missions over again in order to level up and then gear them up again. Unlike in eve where I can just purchase the exact modules I need for the job SWTOR demands due to E-peen requirement to use "end game" gear which drops only on raids\instances with limits per week on how much I can get.
So it was back then mother of all grinds.

Lately patch 2.7 was released with new story arc.
So what changed since the release of the game?
it went F2P with cash shop featuring boosts and I-win buttons including a "companion" called treek which can use heavy armor\tank and heal at same time and got awesome sauce dps.
This cash shop is now also the main feature of the game with regular updates.
Also most importantly the game made some serious change in the levels of characters and gear in the game.
In the past on release era max level was 50 and max gear level was 58,
Today the max level is 55 and max gear level is 79!!!! also the level 69 stuff which is extremely powerful is cheap and easy to get and u can have full set of it in 1 day with questing on 1 character.
Another issue is Legacy bound gear. Legacy bound gear means that I can transfer all items which are bound to one character to another character which I own on the same server, In practice the moment I dinged 55 today on my smuggler I had already full set of endgame level 55 only gear for him... Also end game gear is now craftable and the top tier gear in the game is now sold on the in game auction house for cheap prices so even end game raiding is pretty redundant.
Overall gearing and gear became pretty easy and not-fun.

Next is the missions, In the past you had to group in classic tank\healer\2Xdps team for instances today all new content is in "Tactical Flashpoint" mode which means any 2 players of any role can finish it.
Next is new Flashpoint(instance) called kuat drive yards which grants stupidly high amounts of xp... so much you will gain a level every 2-3 runs of it without any boosts... Add to that xp perks\consumable xp boosts and double xp weekend and u can get level 55 in 10 hours or so.

All and all from story driven them park experience it dumbed down into hack and slash game without tactics where u can get best stuff in the game without any effort and if something drops in Nightmare mode of raid you can be sure it will be added with different skin to the cartel market cash shop.

So I played with my smuggler today > got maxed level > instantly had full endgame set > ran 16 man raid and got another 8 items of endgame gear for my alts and my smuggler > went back to eve to see my skill queue is filled for another 7 days yay

overall I love eve online as I'll never be able to do everything in 1 week less so in 10 years.

Sadly this seems to the the general trend in all games, dumb down, make it so that no effort is needed and strip as much cash off customers as possible before they wander off to another game.

For my theme-park game fix I go the way of Lord of the Rings online, but everything that you said about SWTOR applies to LotRO.

I think that is why I always come back to Eve. Yes, I often wander off, and on occasion with that battle cry of "I'll never return to this f***ing game!!" Usually the more expletives used means the sooner I return! ((grins)).

But you know what. Even Eve is showing signs of going down that same slippery slide. Give it a while and I wonder if we will be seeing three month old characters swanning about in Titans, and no POS in space because everybody has their own Station.

I'm embarrassed to say that when my brain is idling, like on a bus or a meeting, I revert to Sally's Spa or Tiny Tower on my phone. They're so quite unlike EVE that I wonder why I'm obsessed with them at all.. maybe my love for EVE comes down to OCD..

When I have kids, I will give them my c64, my games and will say...

Play these. Beat them.

There will be no modern game in which you will not
be superior to any other kid of your generation.

That ringing in your ears you're experiencing right now is the last gasping breathe of a dying inner ear as it got thoroughly PULVERISED by the point roaring over your head at supersonic speeds. - Tippia

An interesting thread I've opened on the swtor forums: Can this game get any easier?

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=736165

Funny responses there.
