This is thread is a continuation of a rather lively discussion going on in EVE Radios chat channel even as I write this.

The fundamental question is this...

"How does CCP improve EVE in such a way that it attracts, and retains new players, without compromising the games core values of loss permanency and long term consequences?"

All I request of posters is that we keep this cordial, and keep your posts focused on the above question, please no ranting. Lol

First.

Additionally, inb4 ISD moves it to F&I.

Finish WiS, add establishments complete with strippers, nudity, and all manner of "depravity" befitting the hijinks of an immortal race. Watch the local media eat that **** up, enjoy the free advertising.

Hey, it worked for mass effect, and they didn't even really show anything.

One thing I think might have been discussed is the idea of making PVE content more in line with the PVP method of play. That way people can get prepared for entering low sec/null just through regularly PVE play as they train up. Just a thought.

I'll just throw in my suggestion.

I believe finishing WiS needs to be made a priority. Simply having a place to visibly congregate with other EVE players is a fantastic idea, the addition of localized mic feeds would perfect it. This doesn't just appeal to newer players looking to organically find groups to talk to/play with, imagine being able to sit around and chat "in person" with corp mates after a fleet. The addition of being able to take corp photos for instance would be incredible.

On top of the gameplay/social elements WiS could provide, it acts as an excellent means of enticing more people to at least try EVE. Some of our more hard core players take a condescending attitude to more social gamers, but I think bringing in people who just enjoy talking could be a huge boon. Even if they're just sitting in station meeting new people, they're still paying a sub fee, and they're still enjoying the game.

Look at it like a less pointless version of Playstation Home or Second Life, because the social element is backed up by actual gameplay in the form of conventional EVE ship pew, pew.

Excelling in all things terrible.

I believe there will always be a percentage of people looking for a game that offers the challenge and harshness that EvE offers.

I don't believe CCP need to do much more than they are already doing to improve EvE and if they were to implement a specific strategy, my preference would be for them to make it more harsh, certainly not less.

EvE has a unique marketing proposition by the nature of the gameplay and single shard organisation.

It's really what differentiates the game from other MMOs that contain more cotton wool and for players looking for that type of game, it will always be attractive.

A couple of specifics perhaps would be:

  • Encourage more massive fights and be able to offer the infrastructure to make those fights a better experience from a TiDi aspect.

That alone will attract new players. Combine that with:

  • Develop the NPE more to create an understanding of the social and harsh aspects of the game, not simply the solo PvE aspects.

I like these suggestions. They could take all that tech they built for WoD to finish it too. I would like to see some kind of WiS combat system though it doesn't break the deal for me if it doesn't get made.

True. Still though, adding tit's and wine has been shown to broaden the mainstream appeal of just about anything, and that was ultimately the OP's question.

I would certainly hope it isn't, because CCP can't keep putting out half finished products. Dust 514 and soon Valkyrie, on top of that we now know officially that World of Darkness is dead.

They keep pushing out excellent concepts, and then never seem to be able to find a way to properly integrate them into EVE. Dust 514 for instance, a fantastic idea, but they didn't know how to make it work in the context of the broader EVE universe, so now it's a semi dead faction warfare thing.

Excelling in all things terrible.

Well, as my Grand-pappy Fury used to say:

"Son, you can hope in one hand and shite in the other...see which one fills up faster. "

If you make it seriously challenging and much harder for new players you will weed out the wow kiddies and end up with just the people with "the right stuff" for EVE :D

You'll also end up alienating a lot of new players who could potentially be molded into the "right stuff". The idea that anyone would WANT to drive away players is ludicrous.

Your proposal of making things somehow even harder on top of an already toxic community (see "yourself" for details) and a still God awful tutorial is ridiculous.

It seems your request of "please no ranting" was a little hollow.

If you want discussion, then accept all the views and discuss them on merit, not on the poster and your belief about their playstyle.

Remember when CCP scraped Ambulation/WiS and rolled out Incarna, full with laptop melting single rooms + 70$ monocles

I think that caused an ongoing issue with attracting new players/demographics.

WiS is a gimmick. Sure it may feel new and shiny for a month or two but after having to walk down your hallway, into your quarters, past the never-opening-door, probably down another hallway, then find your friend and sit down, will get really old really fast and won't see much use other than station trading and other things that warrant actually loading the WiS and taking 10 mins to get anywhere.

Being in a coalition that accepts newbros with open arms I can tell you that there are already a lot of new people coming into Eve, but with the niche that is tacked on to this game, nothing that CCP does will get the 100K new players every month that every other new MMO does short of turning this into a Theme Park MMO in the setting of a well known IP that doesn't already have a big multiplayer game.
