They have bonus in to hit roll. If you fly them into Golden Dragon they might hit him ad drop epic loot.

It is a fixed value bonus. Usually a ship gets better with your skill set improving. Say, the Inquisitor frigate: It gets more efficient and better at repairing other ships when you train another level of Amarr frigate. Its role bonus on the other hand to range is fully there, even when you have trained only Amarr frigate to level 1.

it's like when you are walking down a back alley and you see a passed out drunk just waiting there to be rolled... bonus!

Oh role bonus Big smile Ships have roles, you get a bonus. e.g a cov-ops ship you get a role bonus to that ship so to fit a covert ops cloaking device among other bonuses that make the ship fulfill it's intended operational role. Intended use, just like military jet planes fit into operational roles depending on design. "Role Bonus:" Descriptive header followed by ship bonus data.

Don't listen to these trolls.

There is an in game consumable item called a "sweet roll". Using this item allows activates the roll bonus on the hull for 5 hours.

Don't listen to these people - it's a special bonus for ship spinning that will increase the speed of spinning till you reach dizzying heights on that counter. Very good for station games.

But seriously, as other people have pointed out - a role bonus is an intrinsic bonus. If you can fly the ship you benefit from the bonus, and it does not go up with skills.
