Freighter Defenses w/ Target Spectrum Breaker

With perhaps the small exception of shuttles, no ship in EVE should be completely without any means of defending *itself* from attack. It is, after all, a PVP game and you don't go into battle without a sidearm.

I suggest rewarding attentive freighter pilots, by giving each freighter 1 mid slot which is only capable of fitting one thing (via a combination of tiny CPU and allocation bonuses on the hull / module).

This one thing would be the Target Spectrum Breaker.

Or rather, a variation of which, which has a probability (determined by the skill) to independently jam for 5, 10, maybe 15 seconds, any ship currently aggressed upon it.

AFK freighters still die, alert pilots get the chance to try and save themselves.

Mixed feelings about this.

I'd like to support something like this because for certain ships, the only means of protection is a separate PvP pilot. If the PvP pilot felt like setting in a belt or following an industrial, he might as well be a mining or hauling xD.

However, freighters in highsec have enough ehp to survive a lone attacker. You shouldn't expect to survive a combat engagement against several coordinated players by yourself.

IMO if you want this type of active defense, ur ehp should take a hit.

Well since you mentioned a sidearm... most people call them escort pilots.

escort pilots.

it is, after all, an MMO.

i'd be more supportive of a remote target breaker tho. That way the concerted efforts of several players is still a threat to a loner.

Well... except that scramblers and disruptors are trivial to run indefinitely and have no chance of fail so long as you stay in range. So long as your lone ship has the dps out break the shield recharge that freighter will eventually die.

Escort pilots are the answer to multiple attackers. You should not need an escort to get a chance to escape a lone assailant.

I'm certainly not opposed to the idea, but let me offer up a variation: Target Stasis Disruptor. Works like the Target Spectrum Breaker, but disrupts ships propulsion systems by killing any active AB or MWD and stops the ship.

I am currently away, traveling through time and will be returning last week.

"escort pilots"
"freighters in highsec"

problem is, they arent allowed to do anything to "escort" you until youve already been alpha's, and concord has already shown up anyways.

Fact is, and im not against ganking, ganking is very one-sided in highsec. the enemy wont engage unless they KNOW they more than likely have enough to kill you before concord, even more so with freighters, because they have NO way of improving their survivability. without fitting or any defensive capabilities outside the base-line EHP, theya re actually EASIER to gank than any other ship, as you know EXACTLY how many of what to bring, and you have the ability to bump them for as long as it takes to get your fleet together so they cant run.

well u can use webs, scouts and command ships before they've attacked u. Logi can be turned on as soon as they appear. u can also avoid hostile systems or not carry as much pre-emptively

the only thing u cant do is ECM and shooting the gankers directly.

and a remote target breaker could be applied to the freighter to have a chance of breaking locks on it.

Freighters trade everything (offense, defense, mobility, etc.) for their massive cargo capacity. I do not think this should change. If you want to avoid losses as a freighter pilot, scout your rout, bring friends, web, carry less valuable cargo, move at different times of the day, or use a different ship for certain tasks.
