Bragging about 21 hour engagements in Eve Online is not cool. TiDi is not an achievement CCP! It's a marginal improvement from the dreaded white-screen.

Piling thousands of people into the same system and having a sub-optimal experience is a bad excuse.

I work for an "organisation" where our transaction traffic peak exponentially once a year for about 20 mins - guess what we plan all capacity planning for that single unknown event: not the 99.99999% of the remainder happy path.

It can be done, try harder!

CCP are already running one of the gaming industry's largest clusters, if not the largest.

The only real way to get more performance out of it, without stepping into the realms of hideously expensive hardware, would be to completely rewrite Eve to take advantage of multicore processors, which is impractical, expensive and generally a pain in the arse.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Because handling a few million individual and independent transactions is anything like handling an ongoing spaceship battle simulation?

You can learn about supercomputing clusters, try harder!

Why don't you tell them how it's done,
if you know better than them?

That ringing in your ears you're experiencing right now is the last gasping breathe of a dying inner ear as it got thoroughly PULVERISED by the point roaring over your head at supersonic speeds. - Tippia

I think this is a stealth CCP-job application thread.

I can't help but laugh when I read the article though. Real Military grade = 60's tech in a post 2010 world. So calling anything military grade isn't a compliment.

I'm not ragging on the server, I'm ragging on the terminology.

Gotta love how 8mm tapes are still being used as a primary storage in many devices.

From the CSM minutes...

"CCP Veritas gave some of the background and history of Team Gridlock in EVE, starting with "In
the beginning, someone decided to write a spaceship game in Stackless Python." Everyone
laughed and replied: "This made a lot of people very angry, and has been widely regarded as a
bad idea." He gave some of the technical detail behind what causes lag, stating that the
underlying framework that makes spaceship combat work has grown organically and there was
never a design or an architecture around it.
"

Minutes then seem to suggest that without a re-write of EvE's core architecture, focus will be on incentivizing for smaller fights, or implementing more TiDi-like stopgaps such as 'brain in a box' (coming soon(tm)).

Military grade hardware specifically refers to solid state drives, when CCP were looking at using them, the only people that were doing so on a large scale at the time were the military.

i could be wrong for sure but all 'spaceship battle' is a group of transactions between server and clients.

Actually, tape storage still has its uses - very specific and limited but uses nontheless.

And oh look, another "multithreading is the silver bullet" thread. ISD should be locking them or something and have a stock response.

No, the article clarifies the application of the term. The term alone specifically refers to military hardware. Milspec is usually a reference to the durability of said equipment to damage and it's compliance with various safety regulations, not how hi-tech it is. I have a milspec flashlight, it costs $280. A cheaper flashlight would be more appropriate for household use, but mine is less likely to break and start a failure cascade inside an ammo storage facility.

It also looks cool.

TiDi never "promised" to make big fleet battles shorter or quicker.

It simply allows even more players than ever before, in each battle, to watch 20 minutes of TV at a time before the next clicky-clicky. Cool, huh ? Roll

To be fair, however, CCP is pure genius in that their Twitch TV content allows you to watch all kinds of EVE goodness in those 20 minute segments. Gottaluv that, since it a least keeps people in the mood. Shocked

Such is the historical response to "more Power" in whatever form it comes. When the Hoover dam was built they figured no one would ever need that much power.....When income tax was first introduced at 1%, they figured that the government would never find any use for all that money.

People should just figure from the start any void created will be filled and the demand will only be greater later.
