Sapper class ship

throwing this out there for the wolves...

a destroyer-sized, single-use hull that carries 2 things: a drill, and an explosive. No cloaks, no nullification, no other weapons. Its purpose it to single-handedly destroy capitals. The Sapper approaches the target, activates when at zero, latches onto the ship, engages drill ::::wait for it:::: plants the bomb inside and boom goes everything.

Catch: Perhaps the ship is uber expensive to make or has a chance to kill the pilot when it's used. Weak as hell (think noobie ship). Can be easily destroyed by just about anything. But it can take capitals down by itself if played right in the right situation. Could be variants of this as well. Perhaps one type for shield, one for armor, one for hull so you have to use some coordinated gameplay with others. just a thought.

Many, many things.

But mainly, it would never actually be of any use - it would get smartbombed to death in an instant

People really overestimate what it takes to kill a capital. A solo carrier or dread is fairly defenseless. A few battleships, with neuts, and they're done. If it's a buffer or resist tank fit, like you'd see in a mega blob fleet, then you could probably whittle it down with a Condor.

This idea is unworkable and unbalanced, and really serves no purpose except to make an already gimped ship class even weaker. Capitals have gotten a lot weaker since their introduction, I've seen them nerfed expansion after expansion.

Things are only impossible until they are not.

Sapper class? I believe they are called "Blood Raider" ships. For plenty of destructive bomb power I've heard some wild rumours about Stealth Bombers, though it seems to an urban legend, a ghost story so I heard.

It's lovely you did mention balancing factors, but I have to wonder, what's the point of introducing more ships, when existing ones can fill such holes just fine?

All posts and mails screencapped and time stamped, including out of EVE, you will not reverse on me.

Might come in handy!

First off, not advocating a nerf to caps. And I'm well aware it's easy to kill carriers if they lack certain defenses. And I know dreads suck at self-defense. Also, I wasn't talking about just carriers and dreads. Sorry if I didn't get that point across. I mean supers and titans as well. It's just an idea and it can be worked with . Flip the idea around and consider perhaps a ship that does the same thing as mentioned before but it takes 15 minutes for it to work through the target's defenses, attached, incapable of warping off. Very similar to siege. This time the sapper has ample resists and buffer to survive smartbombs and can pull off the target's capacitor to maintain its own cap/local reps. Consider that maybe a maximum of 2 can attach to any one target.

-target has time to call for reinforcements and time to engage the sapper(s) attached to it
-sapper has tank enough to survive some local damage from the target, but cannot be repped remotely. (think siege)
-sapper is slower (think BC class) and the destruction time is ~10 minutes or so. Once attached it cannot be removed by any means other than its own destruction.
-Once the sapper's drill cycle is complete, it dies. No option.
-as for other ships filling the role. Which subcap ship in the game exists solely to destroy supers?
-as for frigs killing a carrier. true. but frigs killing ten carriers? how about 10 supers?
