James Arget - CSM8, Wormhole Advocacy and the Player Perspective

I have flown with James in the past and he is a competent wormhole pilot and understands Wh mechanics to a solid level. While i have been critical of James from time to time (I must remember to set some fresh bounties on him) i have never had the need to dispute any of his ideas, they are sensible, balanced and well thought out and i know WH representation is safe in his hands.

He has my votes on a shared ticket of the WH 3.

TBH when I saw your edited post on FozzieGate I was a bit dismayed.

Since your candidacy is the last to come in I want to use this opportunity to ask not only you but everyone else the same question given that thread.

Regardless of your personal opinions and the opinions of loudmouth, "has been" ex-CSM wormholers bitter vets (who don't know how to turn their mic's down in podcasts or really are that loud in RL!) do you promise to actually read and promise to represent the MAJORITY views of your WH constituents even if you personally think they are bad?

Would you step down if you felt this situation compromised you? (i.e. If you absolutely felt something was wrong/right and your constituents (NDA aside assuming the cat out of the bag like the Fozzie post) didn't would you swallow it and do the right thing (represent) or follow your own agenda.

Last thing. Please PLEASE stop starting your posts and opinions with where you are going and why Like they are excuses for not giving a full answer "This post and answer is going to be a short one because I'm - having breaksfast, meeting the pope, running down a freeway naked - " ..................

I don't care what your social/geogrpahic RL situation is at the time of your posts. It's a forum not Twitter.

This simple answer is yes, I plan to represent the majority view. The nuanced answer is that I plan to represent the view I feel the majority would have if the had the same knowledge I do. If people are asking for changes to feature X, but I know that feature Y is going to be released soon, and it will affect feature X, I may not be pushing for the same changes to feature X that players are currently asking for. It's an awkward position to be in, but I'll do my best. I doubt that I would ever have such a strong conflict of opinion that I needed to step down from the CSM.

I initially used that qualifier because I wanted people to know that I considered it very important, and I was there to address the issue immediately, and the only reason I wasn't typing that full response immediately is because.. well, I was already doing my CSM schtick by being in the townhall. I think people would rather hear "sorry I didn't chime in immediately, I was at work for the past hour " than having to ask "where was James on this thread when it got posted?"

1) Where the **** is your campaign thread? (Perhaps lets change this one to, "Why did you post this thread so late?")

Looks like I didn't actually answer this directly yet, got too carried away with the other ones.

Anyhow, it took me so long because I wasn't sure if I was going to be running. As you damn well know, it's a pretty intensive job, and I wasn't feeling the same excitement for this year as I was for CSM 8. All of that first time, discovery kind of inspiration was gone. I had an even better idea what it would mean to commit myself to a year of CSM.

Then I got something else. Instead of the excitement of something new, I have the excitement of something familiar. I'm not wondering "can I do it?" this time around, but instead "how much more can I do?" Being in the debates and hearing the child-like wonderment that Proc and Karen and Asay are bringing to the process is one hell of an inspiration. Some kind words of encouragement from sitting CSM members helped me to make the decision as well, because I'll be honest and admit that I was pretty bummed out after I wasn't selected to attend Fanfest.

As Trebor said, campaign season is the most fun part of CSM, and it's really done wonders to top off my tank and get me ready and fired up for another year of slogging through forums and answering stupid evemails. CSM isn't fun, but it's immensely fulfilling, and I'm ready to dive in for another year.

James was top of my ballot last year, and will be again this year. Not just because he's the founder of SSC, but because he looks at the entire spectrum of wormhole space - don't forget that when he founded SSC we were a corp without an alliance and living in a C2.

I fully support James' candidacy to CSM9. I have had a very long working relationship with James since about 3 months after I started playing this game back in the summer of 2012. At the time I had taken on the (what seemed for me) enormous project of bringing EVE University to W-Space.

James was there to give advice every step of the way. Without his advice I'd have never been capable of playing my role as founder and subsequently Manager of the E- UNI WHC. While I was not the only one working towards this project I was an important contributer and James was my source of advice when it came to teaching newer players the mechanics of living in Wormhole Space. Since then he has been voted on to CSM8, and I have come to know him both as a public figure as a representative in CSM8 and a great friend.

James understanding of the game is vast. I frequently bounce ideas off of him and the number of What-ifs instances he can throw back at me demonstrates a deep understanding of the mechanics and of how players actually play the game. This is his greatest asset that he can bring to CSM. Knowing the mechanics and having the ability to think of a ship fit in multiple circumstances and then asking you questions in the form of "What do you do if this happens" is great advice when you are a fellow player. I can only imagine how CCP find this quality when they propose to him a game change and he can immediately start asking them "Well did you think of this circumstances, because that will break the game as we know it." If I were a game dev this is the type of person I'd want to advice me. I would want the one that can make me realize what I did not think about. And having a great working relationship with CCP Devs is one of the major attributes I look for in a candidate.

Yes a candidate may have great ideas, but if he can't show to us that he can work well with CCP then he doesn't get my Vote. James has shown me, in a great great many occasions that he can do this. That is why he gets my vote, and the fact that he cares about the new player, who are the future of this game.

James is late in posting his thread, I'm late in posting my endorsements :P

James has been a valuable and hardworking wormhole representative on CSM 8; he spearheaded the push to get SMA loot drops fixed, and has reliably followed up on wormhole issues when they come up. +1, will vote for again :)

Hello.

Currently the Serpentis are the only pirate faction in the game that don't have a rated 6/10 and 9/10 DED complex available to be run. These sites have been on the "coming soon" list for quite a few years, but no further news or information has been released. Would you be willing to request that CCP introduce these sites to the game so that areas like syndicate that rely on running sites as the main form of income can continue to grow and prosper?

HOORAY MINUTES ARE OUT!! Perfect timing, because those missing plexes will be a great place for devs to stretch their legs and get familiar with the new content tools being developed by Team Space Glitter.

I'll be honest though and say that I'm much more interested in how these tools are going to be able to evolve wspace. C5 and C6 space especially has a chronic problem in that it's more profitable to stay in your home system than it is to move down your chain for PVE. New content tools will hopefully give us the opportunity to push for a new approach to cap escalations and mobility in wspace. I've already been nagging CCP Affinity about including extra escalation options (including non-capital!) in the upcoming tools, and I think this could be one of the most important and most beneficial changes to wspace for years to come.

T'was the night before 'lection, and all through the forums,
not a newbie was stirring, not even a.. quorum?

Anyhow, with the election night, I went and put together some of the lovely endorsements that some notable folks have been so kind to grant me.

Ripard Teg
http://jestertrek.blogspot.com/2014/04/my-endorsements-for-csm9.html
“I was so impressed by James at the Summer Summit last year. He's knowledgeable, smart, and passionate about EVE Online in a way that a lot of us can't manage. And yet he's also very practical, good at dealing with CCP devs, and not afraid of doing the work. In particular, James often stepped in and did some of the more ugly but necessary jobs that the rest of us didn't want to do. The CSM8 official website is a good example, for instance... James didn't ask if he should do it. He just did it, then pulled input in from the rest of us to make it better.”

“James Arget is a CSM incumbent representing wormhole space. He's worked hard on CSM8 and quietly gone about doing what needs to be done. Wormhole residents should send him back for another term.”

Rhavas

“James will be top of my ballot, for several reasons. 1) He now has a year of CSM experience under his belt, on top of his formidable knowledge of game mechanics. He has been endorsed by all of his CSM colleagues that have posted so far, a testament to his effectiveness despite being less visible than Chitsa. I remember one particular issue where it was clearly something that the sov null guys were up in arms about, but had no effect on w-space. He seemed buried in it – I asked him why he was so concerned. His quote: “I represent the entire playerbase, not just wormholes.” 2) He is passionate about the game, and especially about wormhole space. 3) He is a tireless worker. 4) I trust James. We have more than three years of time together in fleets. He is not only one of the lead FCs, but the founder of Future Corps and Sleeper Social Club, built on his original vision. That vision included having the good judgment to step down from the CEO role when other demands claimed his time, rather than dragging the corp down.“

James worked hard in CSM8 for wormholes and for the game in general. He was easy to work with and kept to his mission. When he targeted an issue he was steadfast in the pursuit of it.

He deserves another term.

As with last year I have found myself supporting multiple wormhole candidates. I have worked with James for the duration of the 8th CSM and he has been a very hard worker indeed, and one who always put the concerns of his wormhole constituents at the forefront of his dealings with CCP and the CSM. He will no doubt continue this going into CSM 9.

CSM8 was such an effective [..] I was really proud of all the work we did at CSM8, and the other people that I was on the CSM with were really incredible. [...] James Arget I think recently announced? He will be high up there, pretty much every CSM incumbent member I will put somewhere on our bracket.

James Arget – Like I said, I’ve had time to get to know James better of late. My impression of him before my candidacy was a CSM8 delegate that I didn’t feel was visible. What I’ve learned is that his method of impacting change is direct interaction with CCP. He knows a lot about the game, he is willing to be frank when the time is appropriate, and he can articulate his point very well. As a wormhole candidate, he’s a top 5 on my list, and as a strong, knowledgeable wormhole leader, he’s a top 3.

Sala Cameron

Has done solid work during CSM8 and is the Wormhole candidate on this list.

So there it is folks, about as good a backing as I could hope for. I hope to give you another solid year, so get on out and let's do this.Cool

...well, that was my read on James in my Grading CSM 8 retrospective of the CSM 8 term. Here's my endorsement of him for CSM9, posted a few minutes ago. As I mention above, James will top my ballot again this year.
