Honestly the sweet spot for scanning is all 5's

I have multiple scanning toons at various levels. Astro 5 and the rest at 4's is noticeably slower then my all 5 toon. I refrain from scanning with my other toons unless I have to.

All 5's toon can scan out 30+ sig wh's in under 5-10mins. I'll map 3 wh's while other people in my corp have only mapped 1-2.

Confirming I am one such scrub and I am way slower than others in my corp that have been smart enough to train them all up to V.

Confirming this. Had an all-V toon and one with IVs and Vs. Was annyoing.
Now all V each, just better. You live in wormholes, so why not go for the real deal.

PS: The only way to get along with not all-Vs are
- be part of a terrible corp
- rely on others 100%, as you won't be able to scan on a competitive level
... in any case, you'll be the guy that no one needs, aside as a meatshield.

Just to reaffirm above, if you live in w space and scan regularly, all V's is pretty much required and is not going to be a waste.

If you don't live in w-space and only scan sites or something like that out in k-space, Astrometrics IV and support skills to III is more than enough to get you by, and it's very little SP.

Relatively new to wormholes here- Why, exactly, is all-V needed? I haven't found any signature I can't probe down with 3s and 4s. Is it just a convenience thing to be able to do it faster? Or are there actually a few signatures I just haven't stumbled across yet that actually needs 5s?

When you spend most of your time in wspace time spent scanning = time not pewing

With the new scanning mods pretty sure all you need to scan down the hardest sigs is like astro 3/4 and a bonused ship

Ok let me clearfy it a bit. All scaning in 4 is more than ok for normal wh activity, u r not in a rush, u scan 1-3 holes per day, feel good when u find nothing interesting.
All 5 is option when u scan most of ur playtime. U scan a chain, nothing good, u roll a hole, scan next one etc. every week u put in perfect scaning skills get paid only when u actually saving time for u and ur guys, so if u scan a lot-it's a must. But don't forget, all 5s without full virtue is like beer without vodka-money for nothing;)

Good points from many. If wh life is your thing then scanning as quickly and accurately as possible is the key to being successful.

If you don't have atleast L4s in the scanning skills you must really hate yourself if you spend much time scanning in w-space heh. 5s is nice but 4s is ok.

I scan more than most and in all honesty, training the support skills to 5 is a waste of time now.
You want astro to 5, covops to 5, support to 4.
Since the scanning changes, supports to 5 make extremely little difference and can be offset all too easily with mid slot mods.

As for skill progression, you want to take everything to 4 as a base minimum, then if you want to improve, take things to 5 in this order:

Covops
Astro
Pinpointing
Rangefinding
Acquisition

If youre lagging behind all 5s with L4 supports, i would suggest it's a technique issue rather than actual SP.
While scanning is reliant on SP skills somewhat, actual player experience and technique counts for a lot more.

You don't need Acquisition to V. IV to V on that is barely even noticeable. V in everything else does definitely help though,

Pfft.

If you aren't flying around with all V's across the board in relevant scanning skills with virtues and scanning hardwirings using RSS core scanner probes, you're doing it wrong.

Though I personally prefer to scan with combats regardless. That way I don't have to swap probe types if I need to scan down a POS/ship or whatever.

Confirming combat probes are the best way to scan down a POS

Is that sarcasm?

If it is, you're dumb as hell.

Some people don't care if people see their probes, not that there is anybody to see mine usually.

I'll echo this and agree with Jack. I've been around wormholes for a couple years now and I still have crap scanning skills. All Vs is the ideal, assuming you had nothing else you wanted to train, but your scanning technique as well as experience is more important than all Vs.

For reference, I have:

Astro IV
Acq II (yes 2, I'm bad)
Pin III
Range III

Double dropping with these skills is doable, though it requires knowledge of the scanning system, and no amount of rank V skills is going to give you that.

I do however have a scan alt with all Vs and the difference is very noticable. Like all things in EVE, it's going to come down to what else you want to train. If you're a scan alt, then get Vs. If you're a main and have other **** you want to train, then astro IV and supports to III is more than enough if you know what you're doing and it saves you a bunch of training time that you can put towards something else.

That was sarcasm puppy. He isn't dumb as hell however because he knows that the best way to scan down a POS is to not use probes at all.

I too like to waste time d-scanning for a POS when I can just drop probes and warp directly to the POS in 5 seconds. You know you don't have to d-scan down POS'es if there is no reason to be sneaky right?

Right puppy? (l0l)
