Did you play SubSpace? (Continuum)

After playing EvE for a while, something dawned on me after seeing Goons call high-seccers 'Pubbies'. It reminded me of what used to happen in an old game I used to play, when newbs were stuck in 'public frequencies' while all the vets would make 'private freqs'.

Are any of you retired SubSpace pilots? Maybe you used to play Trench Wars or Extreme Games? (The two most populated game modes).

I, for one, played strictly SVS (Standard VIE Settings) with VIE being Virgin Interactive Entertainment. More specifically, I played in Warzone CTF and Chaos League. My handle was either 'rzrskater' and then later, 'rzr'. I was always fighting vs. Opulence, ReDs, RAF and Damn Yankees, among other squads. To this day, no game has been able to reproduce the accelerated heart-rate I used to get whenever running around with the 5 flags in my Javelin, picking up greens and getting kills to extend the win timer.... Aaaah, those were the days... That music! :)

Anyways, rose-colored glasses and reminiscing behind, seeing as how these games are _somewhat_ similar, (being online spaceship games where you kill other people) it seems to me many ex-subspace players would eventually find their way into EvE. As SubSpace's motto is "Meet people from all over the world... then kill them!", it wouldn't surprise me that many ex-vets are playing this, and maybe some of them are lurking these boards! I'd love to hear from you if you did!

Of course they are different, subspace came out in 95, and it's predecessor, Sniper, came out even before that. EvE is a decade ahead in terms of technology. I'm just pointing out the similarities in the mentality of the players that would be playing these types of games.

Online Multiplayer - check
Spaceships - check
Competition/Egos/Tears - check
PVP in said spaceships - check
squads/corps/fleets - check
The game being basically just a background to the chat interface - check

I was under the impression "pubbie" was short for "pub customer"

and "publord" was short for "pub landlord"

Nope. Pubbie is the hair you have between your legs.

I played a fair bit of Chaos, Trench Wars, went through most of Metal Gear CTF and ended up in Hockey Zone.

ah yeah, used to play that years ago. Spent more time playing cosmic rift though, back when I had my all-access for SOE before the SWG:NGE patch which got me to cancel all my SOE games. Now I play a game a bit like that but is solo on android called pewpew and pewpew2 though more modeled after geometry wars. Then there is always Naev for something a bit different on the top-down spaceship shooter spin. But yes was on continuum, though most of my free time went into SWG:Jtls and bounty hunting Jedieee at the time. But I wouldn't say I came here from subspace, my path of internet spaceships was more EnB -> SWG -> EVE, as far as the internet spaceships go.

I'm in it for the money

I miss SWG, dogfighting in my tie-bomber and feeding rebels to Fluffy my pet AT-ST.
