Can anyone let me know how to leave my current corporation? (Sorry, not done this before and forums seems to have links to old instructions.)

Right click your picture in chat window > Remove All Roles (requires 24hrs to complete & not needed if you don't have any)
Right click your picture in chat window > Leave Corp

I must be doing something wrong ... by chat window you mean the Local / Corp window? Only right-click options I see are Show Info, Capture Portrait, Form Fleet With and Report ISK Spammer ...

You can't leave an NPC corp you can however join a player based corp.
