Finally: would you consider to publish a program that extracts models and print them on paper?

Naglfar

About 2 meters in size, usable as a coat hanger.
Or for aesthetics, of course.

Warhammer EVE Edition

Build them yourself, paint them yourself (saves making all variants of Megathron, just paint the type you want.

Ships To Make - No Brainers

  • Racial Carriers
  • Racial Super Carriers
  • Racial Dreads
  • Racial Titans
  • Pirate Faction Ships (Unique models like Mach, Daredevil, Cynabal, Sansha Vessels!)
  • The Capsule itself!

Special Edition Model - Limited production / sale (silent auction at Fanfest, PLEX For Good Raffles, etc.)

  • Federation Navy Comet "Police Edition" with working LED lights and Cylon scanner effect.
  • Special Painted editions identical to the in game Alliance Tournament Prize ships given to AT winners.

Affordable Models for Everyone

  • Stabber, Hurricane, Rifter, Typhoon
  • Omen, Armageddon, Abaddon, Auguror
  • Thorax, Vexor, Incursus (Brave Edition), Megathron
  • Raven, Caracal, Drake, Merlin

To save costs, you can include the additional parts (like the extra fins) on Tech II ships with the Tech I model. Essentially sell the Tech I hulls but include attachable (via glue, snap in) extra pieces.

If you have the models made in any affordable manner, then the people making them (China) will likely not get the paint jobs right. The models will turn out much like the USB Rifter from the EVE Second Decade box; BAD.

Let the community step up and fill the painting role (emergent gameplay IRL) Offer paint codes on your website for those who want authentic and let others go to town, make their own designs, offer painting services for ISK.

Size & Scale Matters:

  • Lots of Warhammer models use 1:4800 scale, this would be the scale for expanding into a "board game" direction with model production.
  • Most Star Trek models come in 1:2500 scale miniature. These would fit the Enterprise in the palm of your hand
  • A 1:285 / 1:300 scale would make a 6 ft man about 6mm tall.

Materials to use: The common Model Kits use the following

Injection Molded Plastic

  • Requires a Very Expensive to Produce Metal Mold
  • Relatively cheap to produce each item afterwards
  • Detailed objects cannot be created
  • Extremely durable and rigid
  • Think Army Men as an example

Cast Polyurethane Resin

  • Molds are made from casting around a sculpture and are made of rubber (usually)
  • Liquids are mixed together and poured in so there's no extreme heat or pressure machinery required
  • Requires super glue or epoxy to put together models
  • Think making a mold of someone's head

Photo-etched Metal (known as PE)

  • Used to provide Great detail that plastics cannot provide
  • Created using a CAD software
  • Several steps involving acid that dissolves metal are used
  • Sometimes difficult to work with when gluing them to models

Pricing Points:

Assuming you are making build it yourself models (much like a kit from a toy store), Pricing should be anywhere from $20 USD to $50 USD per model, no more. As an example, a 1/4105 scale Build-It-Yourself model of the Battlestar Galactica can be purchased for about $30 USD before shipping/tax. Considering the market for EVE models would be less than for BG models, $50 for a carrier / dread sounds reasonable.

Build yourself a POLL, bro

Make a POLL for us to fill out. Forums are all good but they wont give you the metrics you require to make this a profitable success. Include questions about:

  • Would you rather have pre-built painted, pre-built no paint, or do-it-yourself models?
  • What size? Palm of the hand, coke can, foot long?
  • Do you want the models to be scaled (so a frigate is tiny, battleship is big, carrier is huge)?
  • Are you interested in sets being sold (all minmatar, all amarr)?
  • How much would you pay for a...
  • Would you enter a raffle for a special edition model?

An Argument on why the "Model Kit" way is the way to go

  1. You use less material with a model kit.
  2. This means less material cost & less shipping weight.
  3. This means cheaper to make and either lower pricing points (or more profit margin).
  4. Lower price points mean more affordable, more potential sales, overall more profit.
  5. People keep asking in the thread for lights and special effects.
  6. A self-assembled hollow kit gives crafty builders room to fit in LED, neon wire, batteries, etc.
  7. We all have the same looking ship, there's no sense of identity.
  8. Paint your ship the way YOU like it, give yourself that identity. Share that identity with others.
  9. Contests over "who's ship looks best", People offering painting services for ISK. The Community having one extra avenue of interaction and growth.
  10. Spaceship collectors / modelling communities get EVE exposure, possibly brings more subs to EVE.
  11. Affordable, paintable models of space ships, "someone make a board game!"
  12. Suddenly Warhammer40k style events pop up, a new demand emerges, new product line created, Fanfast has a new tabletop tournament to host. CCP has additional revenue.
  13. Tech I and Tech II hulls look similar but with added parts
  14. Extra parts are affordable, or come pre-packaged with kits
  15. Just a little glue and our Tech I is now Tech II. No additional cost in producing a Stabber when most want a Vagabond.

Crowd Funding and Pre-Orders:

Before investing company finances on mass production and licensing, let the community put their money where their mouth is. Offer a "pre-order" with incentives like "pledge X and get a 10% discount on all models forever!" Would reward backers and allow the paint service guys to decrease their costs. Just show us a foam / clay prototype to scale.

Keep all models relatively same size as previous, as it seems to work great for details of that size. Lighted is a huge plus, you could use EL Wire or Panel internally to produce an extremely low draw long life illumination with Glow reactive plastic for glowing windows etc.

Suggestions Collections by Ship Size:

Rattlesnake (Although the Widow paint scheme/Kaalakiota is screaming to be made)
Nightmare
Machariel
Vindicator

Tristan
Crucifier
Kestrel or Merlin
Rifter

Firetail
Comet
Slicer
Hookbill

Cruor
Worm
Daredevil
Dramiel

Zealot
Vagabond
Eagle
Deimos

Tornado
Naga
Talos
Oracle

...um.. fire?

Whitemare.

(You see what I did there? I turned the Nightmare white. Like you should.) Something like a Nightmare Imperial Navy Edition would be cool. It even has a cool acronym for people to put in game, NINE.
