Player Features and Ideas Discussion

Intro:
As some of you might know, I have this application which makes it easy to create your own shiplabels (link to that topic is in my signature). Last week someone told me about a background shown behind the shiplabels during the ATXI stream by CCP and he asked me whether it was possible to get this background in-game as well. After some digging and even contacting a GM, I now know that this is not possible. The GM however did advice to give this forum a shot, so here I go...

The idea:
I think that it would be very nice to have this background also shown in-game, or perhaps the ability to turn it on or off within the options. Not simply because it looks nice, mainly because it also has a purpose. Here's a short list of the advantages of having a background for the shiplabels:
- At the moment shiplabels can overlap when your shiplabels are multi-lined.
- The background will make sure that shiplabels are easy to read at all times. At the moment it can be very hard to read if the shiplabel, for instance, happens to be in front of a bright star.

To give a better idea of what the background looks like, here is a picture showing you what I mean. The top shiplabel is the one with the background and the bottom shiplabel is what it (can) look(s) like at the moment. Since the implementation is already here, it shouldn't be too hard using some parts of the code used during ATXI to get this working in-game as well. It would need some tweaking of course, for instance by making the label you're hovering with your mouse on top of everything else, but that shouldn't be too much trouble.
