Ive been a long term Zonealarm user but recently switched to Emisoft Online Armor (free version).

My PC seems to boot up a little faster and I have better control over traffic.

Zonealarm was king once, but not so much these days.

I used to run ZoneAlarm a long time ago, but these days I just use the one built into Windows.

I had old parts gathering dust that I used for a pfSense box.

This is my favorite option.

If you really just want to have a "upgraded" router use DD-WRT, that firmware is bliss, it is what I use mostly for the past years in every router I have gotten my little greedy grubby hands on that is compatible with it.
