Noctis: make it an industrial support to long term roaming.

The Noctis has lost a part of its glory with the addition of the Mobile Tractor units. It was always a sort of odd niche anyway.

I propose allowing the Noctis the ability to reprocess modules and scraps, and to have a few manufacturing slots for small item construction--- I would limit it to the charges catagory, though modules are also thematic and potentially useful with the advent of Mobile Depots. Other consumables like anchorable containers and such would also be appropriate.

This could be done with new industry modules, which should be low slot. T2 versions could offer either more efficiency, more assembly lines, or faster build speeds. It could be done as a straight up ability of the ship itself. Either way it should be possible to cloak while using these functions to facilitate long term operation in hostile territory. It should not be possible to use this while docked. Its not intended to turn your hanger into dozens of free manufacturing slots.

Hello,

Would have you develop your idea a bit more.

Because I think the new tools "Mobile Tractor Unit" is complementary to Noctis and accelerates significantly the gathering of wreck.

my noctis loves mobile tractor units.

I don't think you've thought your idea through very much.

I am not suggesting removing the current use of the Noctis. I am suggesting expanding the use of it to other areas.

I too use MTU to clean up mission rooms, and now only bring out the Noctis to loot the wreckball. You know what does that almost as well? A classic salvage fit destroyer for a fraction of the price. Noctis runs the salvagers faster, and has more cargo bay... Important attributes for its role to be sure... but its role has been diminished. I do not say it is useless or that it has been made redundant, just diminished.

Allowing it to reprocess loot and scraps to raw minerals and manufacture ammunition, cap charges, drones, deployables and even modules gives it a strong role with anyone that does not see a friendly station for an extended time.

I think MTU is overpowered. Its range is higher than the Noctis and its towing speed is higher than a poorly-skilled Noctis. Even though it has only one tractor beam, you can just anchor it while you fight, and cart it off again in your mission ship's cargo bay.

I think the MTU should be weaker than a high slot tractor beam. You want more? Fit a high slot tractor beam. Tractor beams should have their range extended to 40km anyway (cut Noctis bonuses to compensate) and the MTU should tow the same distance but at 1/3rd the speed.

I don't think a MTU should be weaker than a single T2 tractor beam, but it does make a lot of sense that a ship fitted with 2-3 T2 tractor beams or 3-4 T1 one should be more efficient.

MTU should be the lazy option, not the efficient option.

I think MTU are fine, though they could be cheaper. They make a chore easier, which is what should happen.

The appeal, at least for me, of a Noctis is in the tractor beam range. The salvage bonuses on it were an unlooked for boon on the ship. Its also nice that it can handle 10 targets.

The MTU now covers the primary job I wanted a noctis for, and actually is better for me since I only have to loot one box. My computer is older and individually opening that many wrecks was a real chore.

At the same time there has over the years been mention of the need for tools to be better able to live nomadic in wormholes and other unsecured space.

I dont think it would be appropriate for anything short of capital ships or specialized deployables to manufacture other ships in space I think a specialized industrial ship could handle smaller jobs.

Allowing it to make consumables and modules would allow for sustained operation in that environment. With a mobile depot you could build and replace heat damaged modules, cap charges, and ammo of all descriptions. Basically, other than ship loss itself you could be free of the need to visit civilization for a good while.
