Hey i'm new to the game and trying my hand at some manufacturing, but i'm having a hard time finding an free assembly line. Is there a skill i should have trained? Or do i just have to fly to stations dock up and find out?

Try moving away from the more busy areas and use the filters in the manufacturing window to find where lines are located. Manufacturing lines around major trade hubs and routes are almost always filled up with a major waitlist.

Your Science and Industry Window has an "Installations" tab.

It's rather self-explanatory from that point on.

ed: Trade hub areas are indeed usually overused and not immediately available, but sometimes it happens for a few days even out in the a**-end of Derelik where I am. It's the luck of the draw sometimes.

I often fly with the industry window open and the installations tab selected. Do this whilst hauling or traveling to missions and check installations in each system. Make a note of the lower research/manufacture wait times though typically it's the copying and Material Research slots you'll have to wait for.

You can select it to display "by Region".

I meant more as a visual reminder for me to check as I go...helps me to remember and find the nice systems. I do the same with contracts I'm interested in at any given time.

I can usually find an open slot if I get more than 5 jumps from the trade hubs.

Some times a place seems low until some guy logs on with his alts and takes all 50 slots

Any system that is more than two jumps away from the local trade hub should have free slots for manufacturing. If it's Material Research slots that you need then low sec is best.
