When i used to play, player ship destruction used to have a nice satisfying blue explosion... now it doesn't look any different than a rat. What happened?

CCP changed it.

Now, more than ever, we need a dislike button.

It's still not really the kind of explosion where parts of the ship explode with complex debris and wreckage models. :/

I guess the real question was: why?

Was the old explosion too taxing on the server? client-side?

Yes, the old explosions were so taxing that every time one happened, a hamster in CCP's basent blew brains everywhere. Shortly after this was leaked to the public, animal rights activists forced CCP to change to a more animal friendly "poof."

What happened to the Torpedo explosions. I trained them just for that as a noob. They were superb to see. Went to a roid belt and shot the roids for the hell of it when the cost of one torp was a lot to me.

The explosions were too disturbing to nearby miners.

If I had to pick one graphical feature for EVE above all others, it would be that destroyed ships animate breaking up into a wrecked version of themselves, rather than exploding, despawning, and spawning the wreck model at the same coordinates.

Explosions are bad in EVE :/ The worse spaceships explosions in all games of that type

It should be something like when ship hull reach 0% pod is ejected and You see from it how chain of small to bigger explosions are all over the ship, then they starting to rip it apart and in final moment DAAAA BOOOOOOM!!! (i will repeat because it's important) DAAAA BOOOOOOM!!! massive light flash, then shockwaves, fireballs of plazma etc. final explosion should take around 8 seconds to be epic, not just 2 seconds puff...

CCP is already working on that, they already have animated models for capitals, the problem is getting them on TQ without every wreck killing non-high end PCs

Well the secondary explosions on the ship would be a nice effect, especially on bigger ships, but in space explosions behave a little differently than they do inside an atmosphere and I do believe them being only rather brief flashes is actually rather accurate.

In this dark void we are like brilliant stars, holding within us both the creative and destructive power to bring a new dawn upon worlds or plunge them into eternal darkness.

The problem was politics. A few years ago Goons started blue-ing everyone in null sec until it turned into a blue donut. It go SO blue that you could no longer see the blue explosions (that didn't even happen anymore anyway because everyone was blue) anymore so CCP said "screw it, lets change this useless graphic that no one can see because grr goons".

To re-iterate, "Grr Goons".

Very funny guys, haha, +1, come again Roll

So i guess this happened long enough ago that no one can simply link up the extension/devblog when this happened, from the top of their head.

Pretty sure many changes are never documented so pulling out a dev blog or patch note could potentially be really hard...

Each racial ship hould have its own color explosion.

Because why would empires fill their ships with racial fireworks for when they explode?

I remember an old Babylon 5 episode where the deckhands were explaining to each other how to figure out what side of the space battle was winning.

It came down to the color of explosions:
- Yellow/orange explosion -> oxygen based atmosphere burning
- Blue explosion -> argon based atmosphere (i am just making stuff up here), therefore it was an alien race ship
- And so on.

Now that you mention it, EvE races all have unique warp-drive, jump-drive and sensor technologies, hell even engine trails are different color cause of this. There is no reason why they can't each have a different colored explosion when their [different technology] core goes critical.

But i just want the satisfying 'thudd!' when a capsuleer ship blows
