Returning after an 8 year "break" - Some mining Qs

Hello all,

I tried Eve for a while back in '05 and for various reasons moved on to other things. I decided to come back and give it a shot again, but wow, things sure have changed!

I used to mine in an Osprey, but it looks like they killed that a while ago. My plan is to solo mine in .5 to .7 hi sec space. I would rather not be too vulnerable to suicide gankers and rats, so I'm thinking that a Procurer set up to tank and with a loadout of combat drones is probably my best option? At least, that's what it seems like from the reading I've done.

Thoughts?

Also, I'm not sure what skills are necessary to fly that sucker. Am I missing anything? ( Eve Board )

On an unrelated related note... my research alt has about 40K research points on him. Any use other than just buying datacores with it?

I would love to hear any thoughts or advice for a returning player, focused primarily on mining while I am getting the hang of things again.. Thanks!

So, I'd say don't get too obsessed with mining. I've only met a few people who stick with it and don't get too burned out with it. It's just something that's really passive and doesn't offer much excitement in the game.

That being said, I'd recommend training up a few shield skills so that you can fit a T2 Adaptive Invuln Field or T2 damage specific shield. Something like this, http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/67488-Procurer-1.html

Also train up for T2 mining laser upgrades as well.

WIth all that aside, I'd recommend looking into something more hands on in EVE. Definitely give mining a shot, join a corp that does it, and see if you enjoy it. Don't do it alone, you'll burn yourself out and quit. Be open to trying some new things in EVE if mining doesn't work out for you as there's a world of stuff you can do.

Procuror is a fine mining ship. And should easily get the job done. You could also try using the new Venture if you want to do some gas mining. And the 40k RP's you use to buy datacores then sell them I'm not sure if you around after the research nerf, but you can no longer get T2 BPO's via research. So unless you are going to do invention (the way you get T2 BPC's now) just cash out your datacores and sell them

Thanks for the replies.

Archaea, I remember that solo mining wasn't the most thrilling thing in the universe Lol I will likely join a mining/industrial corp after I shake off some of this rust and get a bit of a feel for the political scene. That has probably changed more than the game mechanics! Heck, the alliance I had been in (Phoenix) is dead and gone. I will have to pick up some shield skill books and get a couple levels in them so I can fit it properly. Thanks for that tip.

DaReaper, I had read that you could no longer get T2 BPOs from research (they were still doing the lottery when I quit) which is why I wanted to make sure there wasn't any other use for the RPs before I exchanged them for datacores. Better to ask the silly question than waste a resource! I'm not sure if I will get into invention or not, so I suppose I will just hang on to them for now.

I don't remember gas mining... that must be new. Looks to be a low sec thing, so it will be a while before I dabble in that.

Yup, regardless of how they've changed ship requirements since you left so long as you have the mining barge skill you don't need anything else.

Your eventual goal can be to get into a skiff.

Good Luck :P

Thanks! I was worried about that since EVEMon shows that there are now some prereqs for the mining barge skill that I don't have... even though I still have mining barge (level 3)..

I suppose the worst that would have happened is I buy a ship I can't fly yet, but I'm glad I'll be able to jump right in.

After such long break, i'd strongly recommend running all tutorial agent missions, and also, if you want to stay relatively safe, to read up on current combat / suspect flagging system.

If you had the barge skill before the changes the prerequisites don't apply, you get grandfather rights on any ships that require it as long as the skill level is high enough.

You may find you have some spare SP lying around, I don't know if they were around when you were last here, but learning skills got trashed and we got an SP refund for them.

If you've got a fitting tool have a play with this fit, it should pack around 50k+ EHP against blasters which is what most suicide gankers use. You can get plenty more out of it with T2 modules.

Just wanted to add that gas sites are also located in high security systems.

Good luck and welcome back to Eve.

Be aware that suicide gankers are very organised now.

Don't mine in anything you are not willing to see turned into spacedust (and this includes implants).
