Hey, brand new to the game, and I'm doing the first tutorials and it tells me to approach the cargo container, open it and loot all. But when I do click loot all nothing happens and the item is not added to my inventory. I've checked I'm close enough and I really stumped can anyone help?

I know nothing of the tutorials. Sorry about that.

Those that do would be more able to help you if you give the exact name of the tutorial and what container you are approaching.

And welcome to EVE :)

Are you checking your inventory in the station, or your ship's cargo bay? It should be in the cargo bay.

The only thing I can think of is that if your safety is set to green you will not be able to loot a cargo container that belongs to another player (which will be yellow). This should not be the case in the tutorial however.

As suggested, please tell us the exact name of the mission.

As you are extremely new: are you piloting a ship?
If you are in your capsule, you have no cargo space and are unable to loot anything.

Except for a Capsule, every ship has a cargo bay.

Due to developer genius however, inventory is now "unified" so you might have to go look for your cargo bay. Think Inception, The Movie.
You can also right-click on your ship then click on "Open Cargo Bay" somewhere in the middle of the list.

Its the very first mission I came across I believe its called 'Learning the Basics and I'm stuck on part 7 - looting. When I open the container I have a window which shows be the containers cargo and I believe I can switch between that and my own cargo bay in the left hand menu of the window. I am being prompted to press 'loot all' but clicking the button doesn't seem to do anything and my cargo bay remains empty on the window. I've tried various other ways but I can take it.

Im not in a capsule anymore so I do have a ship, but the contain is showing as yellow so does that mean I need to switch out of 'safe' mode?

Are you sure you're attempting to loot the correct container?

If I remember correctly you need to warp to the location given and then loot the container there which should be a white one.

If a can is yellow, looting it will make you a suspect allowing anyone to shoot you, hence why you need to disable your safety.

Also make sure you are within 2500m from container. Sometimes your momentum can carry you outside of that range but container window stays open (when it happens container node on left side tree of that window is marked by grey color instead of white).

As Matthew said, are you sure that you are attempting to loot the correct container.

No mission will ask you to loot a yellow container, a yellow container belongs to another player. The container should be white. And while you can loot that container after lowering your safety, it will make you a valid target for everyone for 15 minutes. (And it's not even certain that it'll help you with your mission, as usually you need to loot your container, wherever it is.)

My suggestion is to never set your safety to yellow or red unless you are absolutely sure that you know what you are doing. I've been playing for close to a year and I've only set it to yellow twice, and I'm not sure if I should have done it those 2 times.

If the training mission really is making you loot a yellow container, I'd be more inclined to petition it rather than lower my safety settings, especially as a new player.

That's my 2 isk.

If the container is yellow it's a trap, somebody has deliberately dropped a can in the hope that you or someone else will take from it and gain suspect status, allowing combat without Concord interference.

If it's in a system with tutorial agents it's against the rules, baiting newbies in a newbie system is heavily frowned upon by CCP. If you right click on the yellow can you'll get some info and a portrait of the owner, report them for newbie baiting in a newbie system.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! I started a new character and worked it all out, not sure how I did it the first time but I think I royally cocked it up!

Also, the container is diamond-shaped in the left column of your overview.

If you were clicking a ship with no loot that you destroyed, it would be an empty, inverted triangle, which, of course, would have no cargo inside.

(Mentioned that in case OP needed to differentiate between ship and cargo container...)
