[REQUEST] Aesthetic addition: Shield Effects

After over 10 years in existence, I think it's time to give EVE ships proper shield effects (i.e. the kind you can see).

When I think of shields, I think of a translucent bubble wrapped around whatever is shielded, with objects striking that barrier until it is depleted. Or, a translucent barrier that appears when struck, and is obviously totally absent when depleted.

A game that does this decently is Star Trek: Online. EVE is obviously the better game in nearly every conceivable way - but in this very specific category, that game does it better, since this one doesn't do it at all (which makes me sad).

Honestly, in my humble opinion, this is the only blatantly obvious (to me) aspect of immersion which is missing from this game. You've added real turrets, vastly improved missile flight effects, upgraded ship models, made routes visible in the stars, and so many other small and large changes... the game has come such a long way. Can we please give the shields some love? Big smile

Last I checked ( I don't really look at ships anymore). Isn't there an animation over you ship when you use a shield booster or hardener? ALthough the art department may do with updating the animation a little. (Also would enjoy the shields rippling a little when you take a big hit)

Also why would the shield have to be a bubble? Bubbles are energy efficient when trying to encompass large spaces with a small amount of energy. Wheras for a ship they want the shields area as small as possible over the surface (because the shield adds to the sigrad of a ship. Hence why shield extenders and rigs make the sigrad higher)

I know what he's talking about. A while back i saw an animation (not sure if fan made or CCP) that had the bubble around the ship and you could see the flashes where it was being hit. Was really cool actually.

Personally I don't think the bubble will fit EvE online, for one, would it be easier to just keep the 'shield' to surround the ship at the tightest 'fit' possible? That would explain the Shield modules creating a pulsing effect around the ship when active. It WOULD be cool to see the after effects of the 'hits' of enemy fire although.

HOWEVER it would add another thing for CPP's servers to add in this effect, it would probably cause Jita to crash or some or the other. Can you imagine a 1000 ships all with there own hit detection and graphic visual to match? Sounds cool but probably not possible due to EVE's Size.

Not really, because though the game has to do the work to tell you that your ship got hit, the animation and all would be generated locally on your computer. However in large fleet fights effects liek this might be problematic. (but, hey, does anyone run eve on high settings when they're expecting PVP?)

I like the shield idea. Visually I would like to see it as seperate honey cone shaped shield plates that pop up where you are being hit instead of a constant visual shield that surrounds the entire ship.

There were shield bubble long time ago. They removed it during one of the graphic updates, no idea why.

Making the effects entirely client side unless looking at a ship would probably make this viable. This way your ship will show effects when taking damage but you will not see 100 ships' worth of shields damaged by a bomb blast.

Was said later, but that is the way shields used to be in eve. I also quite miss that effect. It would be nice to bring back if they could make attacks hit the egg with a nice shader effect.

I am surprised I don't have any clear screenshots of that in my albums, interesting

Edit: I searched online for a little bit and did manage to find this picture.

The shields show the hardeners as the cloudy effect, the shield booster is the energy wave.
