I5-4440 haswell enough to run EVE in linux?

So I have new PC coming, but I did not order a graphics card, yet.

So, does that cpu have good enough graphics chip to run EVE in linux?

No, I did not buy Windows 8.1 Lol

I will get nvidia or amd card, but I haven't decided yet wich one to order. But untill that I need to be able to switch skills and do some trading.

Low settings are okay!

Right now I have been playing with Lenovo B575e... Yes, works fine with low settings...believe or not!!!

Under Windows this will run EVE just fine - I would presume it would as well under Wine assuming drivers for Intel cards are half-decent.

I've got ive bridge, and it can run eve just fine on lower settings. Haswell should be even better. Though you'll probably need the very latest kernel and mesa:

Works fine with moderate settings on my Acer C720 Chromebook under Linux -- also Haswell integrated graphics:

Intel® Celeron(R) 2955U @ 1.40GHz × 2

I don't do thousand-ship fleet engagements, but it's plenty good for running the busiest L4 combat missions, or mining in Osmon when the Skiff fleets are up with all their drones out.

If you have the choice now and you want good linux performance you should definitely go with nvidia, as their linux drivers are a lot better then AMD. I know from experience that his will save you many headaches and give you better performance.

this.
nvidia's linux and windows drivers are the same code, same version. AMD takes its time to release crappy drivers for linux. on windows, they may have some pretty good offers, but for linux its nvidia all the way.

I'm very sorry, but I hate when people do what you just did.
First, AMD's code is shared between Windows and Linux drivers as well, so this is not relevant here.
Second, saying AMD graphics drivers are crappy is simply wrong. Graphics cards are like computers inside the computer, and writing drivers for them is very complex. Some people have problems, some others don't, this is true for every software that has to run on a variety of hardware. But in the end, the drivers run just fine for a lot of people. It's true their performance is sometimes lower than on windows but they're still fast.
Third, it's kind of sad that the open source drivers were not mentioned even once considering we're in the Linux part of the forum. People running Linux should at least have heard of the open-source philosophy around the GNU/Linux ecosystem. The point is, if you want good open-source graphics drivers for Linux, it's either Intel or AMD, but never Nvidia.

Opensource just for the sake of opensource? Sort of fanatism I see here. For gaming it's not a correct way to compare, in this case it's nvidia vs amd in general. Proprietary drivers are available for everybody, absolutely no need to suffer just for having "all opensource".

I honestly don't understand the whole I must have an open source driver to play my closed source game. If you really cared about OSS you wouldn't be playing a closed source game like eve that requires wine...

It's nice that there are OSS drivers for AMD/ATI cards, but until AMD supports the OSS driver reasonably well it's not actually a reason to buy an AMD/ATI card. Just throwing code and specs over the wall isn't enough. To support linux hardware vendors need to hire full time developers to contribute code to the community plus that code needs to be available and solid when the hardware ships. When I talk to a vendor for my employer I'm firm on the subject OSS drivers, an active plan for upstreaming the code, and now or come back when you are ready to sell products to real enterprise Linux customers. It's not a hard sell any more for enterprise hardware.


I'd like OSS drivers, but let's face it AMD's closed linux drivers, and open linux drivers are pretty hit and miss. NVIDIA's closed source drivers work very well, and heck the OSS version works pretty well for older hardware. Intel's Linux drivers have been pretty good, they are timely, and OSS.
