Gankers can have a heart. Sometimes.

I guess I'm posting this just to show the wormhole bears that not everyone who ganks you is a sociopath without a sense of fair play. The point is, if you are confronted by a more aggressive experienced force, being friendly and having a positive "Eve" attitude can actually get you some support rather than more gankage or harrassment. I think there's a lot of gankers out there who are regular guys just having fun.

I actually believe in helping newbies in wormholes -- often times after I gank them after doing something that would inevitably get them blown up. In the past I've sent money and advice. This week I went from being angry with a corporation for smack-talking me to helping them once they calmed down and convinced me they were new to wormholes. Following is one exchange that followed me refunding a ransom fee, with all sensitive information redacted:

Thanks a ton for the advice...didn't even think of new WH sig being someone entering system.

I very much appreciate the help/kindness - you've actually brightened my week more than you know.

I remember in 2009 when I moved into a wh w/ my oldest son, and we were set upon before we even had the POS shileds up. We survived it, but the move-in represented everything we had, so we almost lost it all right off the bat. We had to learn to PVP fast. But that's Eve!

Anyway, the most basic tip is this - use your alts to post watch over EVERY wormhole before you start mining, rattting, etc. That won't prevent a lone wolf who's been lurking from getting you, but it should prevent 95% of the possibilities. Also, after you scan down, "Ignore" those sites and periodically re-check (every 5 minutes) for any new sigs. Because a new sig that's a wormhole means a scout just entered your system an most will gank a mining ship.

I'll set your corp. to light blue and take you under my loving care. LoL. I have few friends because of my chosen profession in Eve, but I don't like to prey on newbs either.

The only reason gankers show mercy is 1) The weakness of self-guilt and irrationality 2) Falsely believing that letting a target go once will somehow lead to you finding them again in the future (despite the monumental odds against this) and gaining more out of that ransom

LoL I guess your junior psychology class didn't go over criminal and non-criminal sociopaths. Better do some reading if you dare.

Any time a guy leads with 'the only reason' and then gives 2 reasons... you just kind of have to ask...

Not true. I for exampel already returned th efull cost of a hauler (was cheap with like 6 mil total) to a player I ganked by reflex at a gate in low sec, and I ended up noticing he was a Real noob, he had just joined eve like 7 days earlier.. He did nto cry, but asked me what happened, and why he died and how he coudl avoid that and what does someoen do when they loose everything like that? I explained him.. and returned the isk. That guy came to be a PVPer after some time. He eventually stopped playign eve. But if I had not done that he might have stopped at that very moment.

Since he was not a childish whiner, I returned the money. IF he had acted with any self entitlement of safety or wharever.. then would have been different.

That is just rubbish! I have guys I killed contact me and have a great talk, even had a couple that mailed me for advice on different stuff for weeks and months after. Me talking to them was because they were polite, friendly and curious about the game I like as well. Helping them get better gives me the same good feeling I got back when I was new and was the guy asking someone who just killed me how he did it. Has nothing to do with guilt... Just lol! And waiting for them to pay a better ransom? I wont catch them again in something they cant afford to lose after I have been talking to them... I dont know about your personality, but some people can be nice, just because they want to be and not to gain something.

and here's the logic..... new players are the eve future.. are also the future victims, or.. future hunters; who knows?
Kill new players dead out of the game.. you lose that potential. So, being merciful to NEW PLAYERS have merits. hell.. be mean as hell to the older players all you like Twisted

Recruit the noobs you kill, and make them bloodthirsty killers also. Win win for everyone; you now have fleet mates who've got a clue and if they don't, are willing to learn. Those new players will hopefully be enjoying eve more now being in a player corp with some targeted attention, than slogging it out through the impersonal bane that is NPC corp and Rookie help chat.

Do you need cold water to apply to the burned area? If you do so, tell me and I will sell you one for 10 mil isk.
