Can't pinpoint Relic Site

Hey there, I'm very new to the game and have been exploring low sec space with my Magnate, scanning data/relic sites. It's been working really well so far, I find plenty of data sites and get decent stacks of loot. But few relic sites. (2 so far in about 5 hours exploring).

I just found a relic site in a 0.2 sec ss and I can only get it to 68% and no more, I have my scanners as tighter formation as they can go, and centred perfectly on the site, but I can't get higher than 68.3% in on it.

Any ideas why this would be?

Thanks

Low skills?
Low bonus from ship fit?
Hard to say without details.

As above it's a combination of ship bonuses, equipment, and skills. You'll certainly need a dedicated explo hull for the bonuses it brings, then get your scanning skill and the associated astrometric skills up to speed (probably level IV min for the harder sites). I think most dedicated explo folks work towards using the Tech II probe launcher and SoE probes for the best performance

The only real things you can do to help scan down signatures more reliably, other than getting astrometrics to 5 and the other 3 scanning skills to 4, is put on small gravity capacitor upgrade rigs (+10% sensor strength) and use a scan rangefinding array (+5% sensor strength) in your mid slot.

If you are serious about exploration you'll want to get into a covert ops scanner eventually. This is what I use:

[Buzzard, Exploration]
Micro Auxiliary Power Core II
Expanded Cargohold II

Scan Rangefinding Array I
Relic Analyzer II
Data Analyzer II
Cargo Scanner II
1MN Microwarpdrive II

Sisters Expanded Probe Launcher, Sisters Core Scanner Probe
Covert Ops Cloaking Device II
Salvager II

Small Emission Scope Sharpener I
Small Memetic Algorithm Bank I

I have high skills in scanning so I use data and relic analyzer rigs.

Not today spaghetti.

Something similar to this is the ultimate pimpmobile for exploration. When fully skilled, the probes have a sensor strength above 120, and so will occasionally 100% sites at 4 and 8 AU spreads, while the tank will handle the ghost sites as implemented.

[Loki, Exploration t3]
Small Armor Repairer II
Overdrive Injector System II
Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II
Energized Kinetic Membrane II
Energized Explosive Membrane II

Scan Rangefinding Array II
Scan Acquisition Array II
Scan Pinpointing Array II
Scan Rangefinding Array II
[appropriate analyzer] II
10MN Microwarpdrive II

Sisters Expanded Probe Launcher, RSS Core Scanner Probe
Covert Ops Cloaking Device II
425mm AutoCannon II, EMP M
425mm AutoCannon II, EMP M
425mm AutoCannon II, EMP M

Medium Gravity Capacitor Upgrade I
Medium Hyperspatial Velocity Optimizer II
Medium Hyperspatial Velocity Optimizer II

Loki Electronics - Emergent Locus Analyzer
Loki Defensive - Adaptive Augmenter
Loki Engineering - Capacitor Regeneration Matrix
Loki Offensive - Covert Reconfiguration
Loki Propulsion - Intercalated Nanofibers

Use a depot, and refit the analyzer as needed.

get higher probe strength. Don't worry about strategic cruisers for now lol.

You might not need better skills/ships/modules. Hold down your alt key, and move your probes closer individually. Seems line people in this thread are forgetting about player skills, and only considering pilot skills.

They're not forgetting player skills. They're going with the most likely explanation. The OP has no trouble scanning other sites and said his formation is as "tight as they can go, and centered perfectly on the site" and only got 68% hit. If it was in the high 90s you might have a point, but at 70% the problem is extremely unlikely to be solvable with probe repositioning.

Good point. However, I figured that it was worth letting the OP know that there is more he can do, than simply getting the formation as tight as possible, since the op made it seem like he was unaware of individual positioning.

Also, between when he wrote and I answered, there was plenty of time to get another level in at least one of the scanning skills. Not sure what the specific numbers are for how much more you can do, if you get 68% at the tightest the default formation will go.
