Beam lasers high dps than pulse.

Hi All

I have a Maller currently fitted with two medium pulse lasers and two medium beam lasers. Both have MF crystals.

My beam lasers are give a longer range but also a high dps. I thought the pulse should be giving the high damage.

Is there any reason that this could be happening? Is there any skills I may have done that effect beam dps but not pulse?

I was going to buy another two pulse lasers but am unsure now.

Thanks for any help.

Pulse have much better tracking. It's a lot easier to get under the guns of a ship equipped with beams.

This is a relatively new change to the game.

Pulse Laser: better tracking, less fitting requirements, less capacitor hungry
Beam Laser: longer range, better damage

Can't check up on this right now, but if the laser progression is like that of the other guns, then there are 3 kinds of pulse and beam lasers, where each kind has it's own meta level 1-5 set. These guns have varying amounts of damage, tracking, range, and more. So if you have equipped some of the highest damage beams, and lowest damage pulses, that might explain it.

Edit:
It does indeed look a bit like lasers are just weird.
Highest damage meta level 4 pulse laser has a 3,6x damage modifier, and a 5,25s rate of fire, while the best beam has a 4,5x damage modifier and a 6s rate of fire.

Lasers are a bit.... weird. Pulse have the worst tracking of the short range weapon systems. Beams have the best tracking of the long range systems. Beam with MF loaded will do more damage, but Pulses with Scorch will out range Beams with MF. Lasers in my eyes blur the lines a bit more then other races' long and short range weapon systems.

Pulse lasers are capable of high damage in Beam ranges.
Beam lasers are capable of high damage in Pulse ranges.

Until you hit the end of the range basket for pulse lasers, there is little reason to fit beams. Beyond this range basket, beams kinda rock, due to instant crystal change and thus the ability to continuously keep things on the edge of current optimal with good player skills, and the full rainbow.

In the first 1/3 Pulselasers are better than beams, after that beams become way stronger. For example, a Paladin firing at 100km needs to use some Scorch and with 4 imp navy Heatsinks gets insane 877 DPS. But a Tachyon fitting gets nearly the same range with Gamma and 953 DPS with faction lenses.

The "big switcharound" comes when you get below 40km, where a Pulse Laser Paladin with Faction Gama gets nearly the same DPS as a tachyon one with Gleam. With Conflag you only get ~30km Optimal but insane 1220 DPS wich is roughly 15% better than anything you could get with tachyons.

Or in other words, lasers are not that special, there is just no big hole inbetween both weapon systems where you have to decide if you want to go for Damage or range.

EDIT: Mainly because you can get 100km Optimal with Pulselasers. Thats something some arty fitts dream of.

Wait, beams now have better dps than pulse?!?!??! I missed the memo!! P

Why, in my day beams were crap, and we LIKED IT THAT WAY!!

For Odyssey 1.0
Large Energy Turrets have been tweaked to be easier to use as a whole:

  • Capacitor needs on Large Pulse Laser Turrets has been decreased by 10%.
  • Capacitor needs on Large Beam Laser Turrets has been decreased by 20%.
  • Powergrid needs on Large Beam Lasers has been decreased by 10%.

For Odyssey 1.1
All Medium Beams get the following changes:

  • 25% increased damage multiplier.
  • 10% decreased tracking speed.

For the Large version it mainly means they're easier to use, but for medium beams the damage shot up quite a bit, but they track slightly worse, though they're still some of the best tracking medium weapons in the game. Blink

These changes were accompanied by changes to Cruise missiles and a buff to all other medium turrets.
