Upgrading to Naval Frigate; Republic Fleet Firetail??

Been Only playing for about 3 weeks now; been concentrating on mining to earn some ISK and to get some understanding of the game.

I've slowly moved on the military missions, and was wondering would upgrading to the Naval Frigate, "Republic Fleet Firetail", be the next logical step from regular Frigates to start to do some of the harder military missions and play around to gain some more XP??

Or would it be better just to keep flying the regular frigates and jump in the destroyer classes a bit later on?

Any suggestions would be appreciated…..

Probably regular frigates, destroyers then cruisers.
Firetail ~ 12 million each just for the ship. You can get several frigates and a few destroyers for that price.

XP?

Firetail is actually a relatively tight ship to fit; you'll need to work up your fitting skills to effectively fly one. I would not consider one until you can fit Tech 2 guns and tank as well, and be at least at Minmatar Frigate IV and preferably V or you're just wasting its real advantage.

I'd recommend a Thrasher for you until you raise your core fitting skills a bit. And then afterwards as well, because Thrashers are great.

As posted above, a navy ship at 3 weeks in really is just asking for a Lossmail.
Regular frigates or using a destroyer is the wisest course of action right now, you'd lose a tenth in hull costs compared to the navy frigate, should one go bang.
At least that would be sustainable early in your career.

In the mean time build up your fitting & gunnery skills, it'll give you more options damage and range.

Also make sure you train the associated race's frigate skill to 5 before flying a navy frigate or you won't be getting the most out of it. You need to maximize the damage bonus from the ship skill to compensate for the loss of a turret mount point.
