Argh, my hip. Should I not go to work tomorrow?

Hi there. You may know me from thread such as "Help me lose my fat gut", "I am still fat, should I eat more McDonalds?" or losing in the first match of the EDU PvP tournament & proclaiming victory for Goonswarm. I hurt my hip again last night, likely somewhere between getting up off my seat & standing up completely. Now whenever I try to stand up I am in horrible pain & have found doing my cash money job rather difficult. Should I call in sick tonight & play games instead?

If you eat more Mcdonalds you will soon forget about the pain in your hip.

Call in sick, stuff your face hole!

Take the day off and get a therapeutic massage. The massage will loosen up your muscles and tendons, clean out any soreness-causing toxins (such as lactic acid), and get blood circulating around. The circulation will help the injured area heal up. But mainly, the massage will feel damn good give you some pain relief. After a few hours you might feel sore from the massage, but a hot bath will fix that. In the meantime, so therapeutic gaming can help too. Smile

Edit: Your health insurance might pay for the massage. Check it out.

Calling in sick is only for those that are contaigious. Calling out for any other reason is pretty much lame...unless it involves the tang...and I do not mean the orange stuff you drink that was created by NASA Twisted

This does not sound like a serious thread. But I will respond for real now. I was working with very large athletes doing speed, power and agility treaining 5 years ago. I was under a 10 pounds/4.6 kg lift restriction and had an intravenous pic line in my right arm to deliver antibiotics directly to my blood streem every 3 hours. This was due to a Crohn's related abcess that was growing at the suture line from my previous bowel resection.

So; no. Do not call in sick for your hip problem. Orthopedic issues rarely require sick leave other than for appointments for evaluation, rehabilitation and/or surgery.

EDIT: Let vme clarify., If it hurts bad enough to call out of work then it is bad enough to go sit in the Dr's office to get checked out.

Well I work night shift so I'm only 4.5 hours in. It's been alright so far, I've spent the last 10 hours sleeping under heavy painkillers as recommended by the doctor. Hip still hurts & I'm having trouble getting around but since I'm at home crawling around is acceptable. Not going in was a good idea since I have to do 9 hours of walking per shift.

I know!

it would be easier for me to condemn my behavior if it didn't feel so good though...and if it weren't so effective. in fact, i'm about due for another "mental health" day. maybe this week!

Don't be a pussy it's just pain.

I carried on working on a building site with 10broken bones in my foot, granted it was my site but I still grafted and carry that ethic over to everything including sports.

I did a week after the break when my foot no longer fit into my shoes, luckily after I drove to the hospital and was made to walk around the labyrinth (because I was initially told i was not in enough pain for it to be broken) to find x-ray a nurse came rushing in with a wheelchair to tell me to stop putting weight on it, but somehow all the bones had remained aligned.
Took 3 years to fully recover thanks to a Dolphin re-breaking it in the Caribbean (not even joking).

I have broken many bones over the years being obsessed with extreme sports, I know exactly what a break feels like even a fracture.
That wasn't always the case though, the first time I broke my arm was at about 12 when I tried to jump my Malaguti and ate **** pretty hard, my arm hurt but I got up and tried it again, that's when my first fracture turned into my first break, I remember an Irish doctor pulling at my arm to realign the bones and I was offered no pain relief.

Luckily I had avoided any pins or operations to correct any of the breaks until this morning, I have just been booked in to have an operation on my nose that has been broken 22 times in the passed 15 or so years... But I look forward to breathing properly through my nose again.

But now I am less Rum filled I would say to the OP make sure the hip is causing no long term damage i.e. dysplasia or athritis, but if it is just a trapped nerve **** it, work it out.

When I was in Marine Corps boot camp, we did a thing they call 'The Crucible' which among other things involves walking up a 45º+ incline a few dozen meters long while wearing about 40 kilograms of military gear and carrying a 3.5kg rifle. Earlier we had done several runs and walks in this gear to get everyone ready. Some of us had fallen back during the runs, and some of us had broken or sprained ankles during the runs. I don't believe anyone experienced both of these, and I think that says something about the attitude of "no pain no gain". I fell back once or twice when I was unwilling to push myself past reasonable limits.

Fast forward to the hill. As we start to go up, I look at the monster and it wells up over me like a cliff wall, daring me to try to scale it and assuring me that I will not succeed. I think about the folks back in the barracks in crutches who got left behind because they weren't fit for this sort of footwork at the moment. They had been at one point in time the top athletic performers in the platoon, all very driven to succeed at any cost. Well here I was, trudging my way up a steep incline with a somewhat smaller platoon all around me. I knew at some point that it was slightly too much for me. I refused to stop, but I slowed just a tiny bit. I feared that I would be pushed to the wayside as others rushed around me up to the top, but actually soon enough the whole platoon had begun to slow just a bit. The drill instructors pushed us to go ever faster, but we moved only as fast as we could go. A couple fell to the side and were left behind. I was not one of them.

FT Diomedes: "Reaver, sometimes I wonder what you are thinking when you sit down to post."

Frostys Virpio: "We have to give it to him that he does put more effort than the vast majority in his idea but damn does it sometime come out of nowhere."

I've broken a scapula, and fractured a radius and tibia (two different events). None of these were anything I saw coming, but it is probably my fault I was involved.
