Hello everyone, I am a returning player to EvE and have taken a number of breaks in the past from the game. Anyways I have mainly trained up solely for Amarr ship use, I am fully capable of fitting an Amarr BS and anything lower with T2 equipment. I want to begin cross training over, however I am unsure as to which race would make the easiest bridge from Amarr. I hear gallente share a lot of the same skills Amarr uses, thus making the bridge a little more forgiving.

Gallente is probably your easiest cross train. You should really look for what you want to do with the character though. A Gallente mix would open up SoE ships (for exploration, I guess) and gives you a solid HAC, but you need good to great drone skills to make the most of it. A Caldari cross train would open Sansha ships for... incursions, really, as the Nightmare is the only worthwhile one. It would also take advantage of any missile skills you have from Khanid ships. Minmatar wouldn't really open anything but at least takes full advantage of your gunnery supports.

But really, what do you want to do?

I want to run some incursions eventually and start breaking into pvp. I've heard that amarr are sub par when it comes to pvp due to them dealing only two types of damage. Amarr frigates are no good at pvp because their to slow, which is unfortunate as thats obviously the cheapest way to learn pvp.

I'd suggest going with Gallente as they use Armour skills as well. If you have good drone skills already then that's another incentive to roll with Gallente. You will have also no doubt been primarily training your gunnery skills for use with Amarr ships which will make training hybrids a lot easier.

If you train for Caldari you will have to train up shield skills (doesn't take too much time i'll admit) and missile skills which you might not have even bothered starting.

The Nightmare is indeed a nice ship but IMO if you are strongly Amarr focussed already I'd go the Paladin route. Especially when facing Sansha's Nation as an active Bastion module will negate the effects of tracking disruptor's which can be a real pain in the rear.

Also as mentioned above, cross training Gallente will give you access to the SoE faction ships if you have any interest in exploration.

To be fair a Minmatar cross train would open up the Bhaalgorn. But Gallente is probably the easiest choice since Amarr are also focused on guns/armor/drones.

However there is nothing wrong with Amarr in PVP. Most ships in PVP are omni tanked so damage types don't matter much unless you are shooting at a T2 hull with exactly the wrong weapon system or ammo.

Gallente share similar skills, but so do all the other races in some aspect.
Since a couple of patches back,
Amarr have drone boats
Amarr have missile boats
Amarr have gun boats

Amarr have good range for their gunships, especially with Scorch.
Minmatar might give the best, comparable, fighting 'style/range'. And Minmatar are generally much faster hulls.

In general, I think you could do just fine, staying Amarr. Don't let anyone convince you that Amarr sux, because they don't.
If you HAVE to change, just pick a ship or race that YOU want to fly, and go for it.

Amarr frigates are fine for PVP.

Minmatar is what I went with when I cross trained from Amarr. It opens up the Blood Raider ships, reuses your turret supports and armor skills while also opening up some ships to promote missile and shield training. You end up with a nice cross-section of playstyles available once you are done. Sig tanks, Shield tanks, and Armor tanks. Lazers, Projectiles, Missiles, Drones, and EWAR. Having strong Amarr/Minny skills makes cross training Caldari/Gallente just a matter of training ship skills.

Just my opinion. Ultimately go with the one that looks most interesting to you.

For incursions:

Train up some Caldari BS and shield skills, and you'll be able to get into a Nightmare. Very popular incursion ship.

For PVP:

Amarr ships are very good PVP ships. Don't know who told you otherwise, but we have great (Read: Flexible) ship hulls.

Amarr lasers are probably the best weapon system in the game right now, offering the best combination of dps, range and tracking. Only 2 damage types is a bit of a downside but still - lasers are great.

Amarr ships are the second best drone users.

Amarr interceptors are the fastest interceptors in the game...IIRC...maybe second fastest, but still pretty damn good.

Amarr Cruisers, both T1, Faction and T2 variants, are excellent.

Amarr Ewar comprises both TD and Cap Warfare...The Curse and Pilgrim are probably the best Recons in the game, if you're looking to go down that road someday.

Amarr Stealth Bombers have a bonus to EM damage, and are generally considered to be within the top 2 racial bombers depending who you talk to.

Amarr Battleships are ******* fantastic. Abaddon ftw

Amarr Carriers (Archons) are the best armor Carriers in the game, last I heard.

Amarr T3's, though not as good as the others (Especially with cloaky subsystem,) are extremely flexible in their roles and are bossly motherfuckers to have in PVP with the neuty subsystem.

Plus, Amarr ships are sexy as **** Blink

As you can see, Amarr players are actually very well off. If you don't wanna train Caldari skills to get into the Nightmare, then I would suggest training for Gallente due to them being natural armor tankers as well as the game's primary Drone users. They use both Drones and Hybrid guns, so a lot of your current Amarr gunnery skills will be put to use with their ships.

The Gallente also have the best PVP T3 but aside from that I can't really make much comment on the quality of their other ships.

A longer train would be

Gallente bs + blasters + T2 sentry / T2 heavy drones + shield tank -> Windicator --- short range - shield incursion ship
Minmatar BS + T2 artillery -> Machariel -> --- incursion sniper boat, albeit subpar to the nightmare
Caldari BS + shield skills + cap transfer skills -> nightmare -> long range incursion boat

This will net you all the races T1 hulls while being able to do incursions in various ships, and you'll have a easier specialization route if you decide on ship "x" from race "y"
