Greets!

Some folks I chat with in-game keep mentioning STANDINGS. In a recent thread in EVE New Citizens, one said, buy them (STANDINGS).

Why do we care about STANDINGS?

If they are important, what can I do to improve them?
Can I buy them? Where? How?

What STANDINGS do I want to improve?

Thanks!

There are several kinds of standings in EVE.
You can have standings towards other players, player corps, player alliances, NPC agents, NPC corps and NPC factions.
Most of the time, when people are talking about standings, they talk about standings towards NPC corps and factions.

You gain them by running missions. You can pay someone to run missions and share the standing gain with you. If you only need the standings for a short period of time (e.g. to anchor a POS in high-sec), you can also pay someone to join your corp and boost the standings for that action.

Google 'EVE standings' for more info.

For the most part, standings refers to mission/research agents and the NPC corps they are attached to. The higher your standings, the better missions you can access.

As to buying standings. The most common way to do that is with tags. You buy the needed tags on the market and turn them in to one of the faction tag agents you'll find in various places. To fill in the gaps between tag standings since you need a minimum standing to use each one, you run COSMOS missions. Specifically the ones in which you can buy the mission completion items off the market and simply turn it in without actually doing any work.

Also each completed COSMOS mission gives you faction standings. Compare that to 1 in 16 regular missions for faction standing and it turns out to be a pretty sweet deal.

If needed, you can easily repair negative Faction standings as well as boost positive Faction standings with 'The Plan'.

If you've played other MMo's think of standings as reputation. You increase them by running missions, as it increases so will the level of mission you have access to, it also reduces things like refining taxes.

Shooting at NPCs from another faction will reduce your standings them, if your standings drop far enough with one of the four main factions they tend to shoot at you when you're in their highsec space.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Can that be fixed by mission running?

Yes, but even easier is just training the social skill called Diplomacy. With it maxed you'll be able to go anywhere with no worries, no matter how badly you tanked your faction standings..
