On steam right now, you can buy the eve starter pack for 4.99, but on the eve site you pay 10$ a month. I have heard some bad things about linking steam to eve and i am wondering if i should go the steam route or just directly through the eve way. And also if it is good for the eve rubicon bundle as well.

If it was me, I'd just buy it straight from the eve site, don't know anything about steam being bad with eve, I just don't care for steam. If you're paying for eve you should get the latest version of the client automatically.

The only Steam issue that I'm aware of is that you can't transfer characters between Steam accounts and EVE account — and I might even have that one wrong.

There's an in game channel "Steam" where Steam users can chat, they might be able to address your concerns.

While you can't turn a steam account into a regular account you can transfer a character from a steam account to a non steam account (yes it's not the best set up and you have to pay for the transfer).

I would suggest getting it trough this site instead and avoid steam, while I have not personally tried it I have heard several complaints about steam and EVE.

Edit. Mara! Long time no see! Hope your doing well Big smile

Chiming in on the "don't bother with the steam version even though it might look interesting", there's just too many... issues with EVE from Steam.

So even though its only 5$ right now, its sitll not worth it?

There's way too many (unknown) silliness that comes from having to log in via Steam, I just wouldn't bother. EVE is a long term game and that bit of cash really isn't worth any potential future issues you might run in to.

I use Steam to launch and play EVE. I have ZERO issues.

It's personal preference. If you can get it cheap through Steam, go for it. Save a few bucks. It's not like your EVE account/characters go away if you don't use Steam sometime later down the road.

In the big scheme of things, $5 will mean nothing after a few months / years of paid subscription.

Entirely off-topic for this thread: before Christmas I bumped into some old WoW friends who were playing again, so I resubscribed to join them, and have spent the last month or so re-remembering why I disliked WoW so much that I started playing EVE in 2007.

The problems with WoW are in the game design (and more importantly, the features added for the convenience of the self-entitled unwashed masses), and make the trivial issues surrounding Steam login to EVE Online look like a joke.

I would suggest that over time CCP and Steam will end up resolving the issues surrounding the Steam-authenticated client.

In the meantime, understand that the game can be downloaded for free, you can set up a trial account for free, and if you manage to pay using a ISK-bought PLEX you pay nothing to set up the account. So you can save $5 by simply raising 600M-odd ISK in your first 21 days of playing ;)

I did something similar. I started with a Buddy invite and got 75% of my plex back from the guy whose buddy invite I used.

Back then a plex was around 500m isk and I had to only raise 125m for my first plex, which was totally doable.

But the game is much more fun to play if you buy your monthly subscription and enjoy it, instead of having to work ingame to be able to work in game next month too.

I bought another EVE account through Steam a few months ago when it was on sale and I've had zero problems with it. Only thing I can see now is that the cost of plex is unchanged even though CCP is currently offering discounts on bulk purchases.
