Both have pros and cons.

Missiles have the advantage at always being able to select the damage needed for a task, whereas most turrets are locked in a particular damage. Missiles have excellent projection (meaning they can hit well no matter if the target is close or relatively far).

On the downside, missiles have travel time, which will cause a delay in applying you damage. Because of this, many larger pvp groups and incursion runners shun them. Add to this, that if you attack a target that is too small and/or fast, they can mitigate the damage you do significantly.

Turrets have advantages in that they apply their damage instantly, and are not as affected by target size or speed IF they can attack at a decent range. Many times, if a target gets too close or moves too fast, your guns can sometimes have difficulty hitting (tracking) the target. This can be resolved by various modules and manual flying techniques, however.

As for there disadvantages, most I have already mentioned. Turret ships require somewhat more effort to use effectivly, whereas missile ships are relatively easy in comparison.

It all comes down to personal preferences and playstyle. I use a missile ship in my solo mission time, but because I am lacking in my gun skills, it is more difficult for me to get in the larger group pve like incursions.

I'd say maybe get a couple frigates of each type and mess around with them, in the end the choice is yours, so you gotta do what you find most enjoyable.

Have fun and enjoy the first weeks of eve and dont get discouraged by the hurdles. It's a tough game at times, with even tougher players.

When I first started I trained turrets (projectiles), have had thousands of kills with said weapons and still use them.

Missiles are a bit more awkward to counter.

You should take what race's ships you would prefer to fly into account.

For example Minmatar are mostly turrets and Caldari mostly missiles.

Also training Turret support skills as a priority, gives you access to 3 weapon systems - Projectile, Hybrids and Lazers.

Whereas the The missile support skills only improve the performance of the one weapon system.

But you will almost certainly train them both eventually. It's only a question of which to prioritize.

Yeah. Don't think of this as "either/or", but "which first".

Whether you use missiles or guns on any given ship depends more on the bonuses of the hull you are flying than anything else, at least in most cases.

Both missiles and guns are extremely effective in PvP and PvE when used correctly.
