How to plan out skills

I've just come back to the game from a very long hiatus so I've forgotten almost everything I once knew and an awful lot of things have changed. I was always a newbie at the game but I put in a few months playtime so I have a character with a bunch of skills already that I have no idea what they do.

I'm not 100% sure what I want my end game to be, but I do know for sure that I don't wanna be a miner. I'm pretty sure the last thing I was doing was jumping between ratting in low sec and running missions in high sec. If memory serves I had worked up to doing level 2 missions, I may be remembering wrong tho and that may not even be a thing. >_< Both were kinda fun but I would like to add some PVP into the mix this time around so that I don't get bored of the game. I was part of a large war in null sec when I was playing before and I hated it. Sitting around in a really large fleet for hours waiting for a battle to happen where you get blown up in the first couple of minutes isn't really my idea of a good time, even if the banter on chat was fun.

Long story short I'm probably gonna aim for ratting/mission skills for the moment with a mind to working towards PVP, camping gates and that kind of thing as apposed to large warfare. I'd like some help trying to figure out what skills I should work towards, what ships I should be aiming to fly, what modules/weapons I should be aiming to fit etc.

Some advice on how to rat or run missions effectively would also be appreciated. I think before I was just jumping around asteroid belts and killing off rats, or jumping around from station to station looking for missions. No real plan to it and I've read recently that ratting that way is really inefficient.

I also remember that there used to be a way for me to view my skills and stuff offline, and software that helped you plan out your next skills and stuff. Do things like this still exists and if so where can I find em?

I know I've asked a lot here and I don't expect anybody to answer in full but even some direction towards some reading material would be great. Thank you for your patience, sorry for the newbie questions.

So you don't like to wait in a 0.0 fleet but you are ok with waiting at a gate camp?

Think on this: if you like running missions, there might be a form of pvp that runs missions too, and w/o the waiting around stuff Big smile. But I agree, I don't like waiting around so much either.

As for training, it's just combat pilot. We don't need to think too hard. It's mostly perception and willpower. Pick a frig, and/or cruiser, train it out. if pvp, youll want a good frig, maybe a destroyer too. Frig especially if more pvp than pve, but AF's can do pve well too. Or whatever ship class/size catches your interest most.

But if you left last time from just sitting and staring at the screen, putting you to sleep, well you'll have a great time doing the same at gate camps ...until you un-sub again. I don't know how they do it, I rather be on the move, pushing forward.

I'm in it for the money

Heh hadn't though about the waiting around at gates >_<
That idea still appeals to me more than large fleet battles so I'll probably still give it a go at some point, but you do have a good point and it may very well bore me to tears.

What other types of PVP are there?

I should probably focus mostly on ratting for the moment anyway, it'll give me something manageable to do while trying to learn and get better at combat.

In this very forum, there is a thread called 'Evemon ,The Character Planner'. Load up Evemon and make some ship plans for different ships, trades, whatever. It's a GREAT app.

I think that's the one I used to use. It doesn't run on Mac unfortunately and I'm way to lazy to set up a virtual machine. I did a bit of searching and I found an app called Neocom that seems to be fairly well received so I'm gonna give that a go for a bit. Cheers for the advice.

That includes mission running? Note my corp. We also do pvp plexing. Each empire has such a corp and you can choose any one to join.

It would be worth it to set up evemon if you include EFT with that, imo.

I'm on a Mac as well, you can try Vitality for making basic skill plans. It's not quite as complete as Evemon apparently, but it's enough for me. Note that it's still not up to date for Rubicon, so it uses the old certificate system. Hope it helps, and welcome back to EVE!

I use Neocom on my iPhone, it works pretty well. You can do character training plan in there and also look at fittings for ships.
It has a direct in-app link to battleclininc aswell if you dont know what to fit!

You can use gtkEVEmon on Mac, and Linux.

It isn't as nice as PC EVEmon.
