Hello friends! I was looking for a program to make animated shorts with and I thought there would be no better community to ask than my EVE friends!
I was wanting to make an EVE / Dust animated short and maybe add some live footage in. I heard Adobe Flash was ok, however, after trying out Photoshop, I am a little put off by Adobe. Any ideas?

Thanks, Kanonier

I'm willing to give you some sites with good software if you trade me 500m ISK.

When Bon Scott died and he appeared before St. Peter at the gates of Heaven, St. Peter looked at his record and told him he couldn't get in. Just then, God screams at Peter, "Let him in, Karen Carpenter is driving me nuts. I want to hear some music with balls. We'll haggle over the paperwork later." At least I hope that's what happened.

The question is totally inaccurate.

Are you able to use your own models or do you just want to record the clients screen?
Are .gif sufficient, or does it need to be a audio/video?

No, I want to make an animated short. with maybe some in game footage. So essentially, I want something that can do animation, but also short videos from EVE or Dust in.

If you have access to a Mac then Motion 5 is one of the best animating packages for a very good price.

Not as feature rich as Flash when it comes to drawing the components of your animations directly in the software, but more feature rich when it comes to incorporating video.

And it will do all the things you've listed, drawing, 3D, video and audio.

Nice, i'll check that out - thanks! I got a trial for Flash Professional CC, so I'm going to play with that some, and I just found this http://www.creativebloq.com/create-animation-photoshop-and-after-effects-5132655 .

Yeah After Effects is a very good program. Motion 5 and After Effects are similar programs in terms of their features and uses.

Been looking at Motion 5, that is NICE. I think that gets my going in the right direction. Thanks!

Why would anyone want to draw animated shorts on Eve characters?

I feel the pants provided to us by our CCP overlords are just fine, I really don't see the need for any animated bottoms.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

Hm. making an "animated short" is pretty vague.

The software used in creating artwork, in this case animation, is only a tool. The question you are asking is like saying, "what pencil do I use to create a picture of Goku?"

If you want to make a 3D short, I suggest learning a 3D package. I would suggest Maya (it's what I use mainly) or 3DS Max, Modo, or Blender (yuck).

The key skills you should learn for the software package are as follows:

General navigation and the theory behind a 3D workspace
Modelling (Polygonal or otherwise)
Rigging
Texturing/Painting
Animation techniques -> "Illusion of life" or "Animators survival guide" are good books to pick up. Or just watch tons of movies, and analyse what they do.
You should probably throw some film theory into it, creating a sequence on screen is more complicated than it looks. Camera axis, shot progression, timing, proper types of shots and their uses etc etc.
And finally, Rendering and Lighting.

You'll need to comp the footage that gets pumped out of your 3D app, so I would recommend using After Effects or Nuke (or w/e comp app you are familiar with)

If you want to do a 2D short, grab a paper and pencil and start flipping. Or get Toonboom or Flash.
Choose whether you are going to be using symbol based animation, or frame by frame (traditional).
Again the two books mentioned previously are a fantastic read.

Also, don't forget Pre-production.
Boards
Character designs
Colour concept etc etc.

Hopefully some of this info will help guide you in your searches.

This seems to be way beyond your head. *lol*

You don't even know proper search terms. That'd be a good start.
