Hiya all !

I Won my first 1v1 frigate Fight !!!! *flexes* * runs around jumping on couches like Tom Cruise ! *

So as you all know I had been posting here since i found the forums and have been given such great guidance and support by everyone who's posted here in helping me find and learn about PvP !

yesterday's report was of my 6 lost ships in my first official night in RVB so of course i came here to get questions/feedback/etc.etc. I also left the day after reading everyone's replies feeling more positive and confident that if i really tried to understand the advice y'all gave me that I was already a much better pilot.

THIS is the epic way it finally culminated to my first win !

I log in... i figure i take my very last Rifter out to Josemato ( sp? ) and start looking for more pvp experience.
warping in i find a gate camp ! an Algos destroyer with drones out and a slasher within firing range !

I immediately align to & lock, and commence firing !!!!

I think.. i might just make it ! I may just beat one of these guys before I 'SPLODE !!!! I get blasted before the guy's shield's even break 25% damage. i wasn't able to properly close range and other factors . my ship gets torn to shreds and i siting my pod.

The guys from Red Federation all said good fight.. the destroyer i think didn't even know i was there until after i exploded.
I start asking what i coulda done to make that fight better. they said.. politely " Get yor POD to a station first ! and away from the Gate camp ! " lol....!

so as i flew I asked in Local.. anyone wanna do some 1v1 with me ? i just got to buy/fit a new frigate then i'm golden !
a few people answer and patiently wait. 10 minutes go by and i tell them.. i bought a refitted Tristan in the contracts available but found out it had no guns ! it ws fully rigged, had drones.. even web/AB/scram.. but no guns !

The most amazing thing began to unfold.. my enemies.. the RED Federation. the guys in local.. all began offering me SHIPS ! & GUNS ! everything !
A Blue Faction veteran laughed and shouted in local.. " Arc'Los you know THAT's the enemy you talking to right ?? "

I smiled and said.. " that's my best teacher ! my enemy !" ..everyone laughed at that.

I go out in an incursus provided by corporate and veteran : Biloojo ( Blue Republic ) and got my arse handed to me yet again.. by a slasher !

so finally : William Aero of the RED federation gives me HIS incursus ! fitted and everything.. i had to remove the T2 blasters cause i didn't have he skill for it. and he gave me.. nearly 100 T1 meta 3 blasters to replace those! o.O

we meet out to 1v1.. he arrives in an Amarr frigate ( Punisher ) and we fight! the fight is going long ... I flew at him, turned, tried to keep closing the distance.. and just before my hull reaches 50% . i see/hear an explosion.. and to my disbelief.. it was NOT my ship ! ... I .... had.. Won !

i showed the killmall to the blue corp channel.. and they said Good Job !

Biloojo adds to the channel saying : " He blew the man up with the ship.. that man gave him. That was harsh ! "
More laughter...lols and wtf??? . hehe!

So that's the story of my first ever win in a 1v1 fight as a member of Blue Republic.

( i also later won with the same Incursus vs. a T2 fitted Merlin ! .. i don't know how that happened! )

OFFICIAL new Question!

- how would I fit a Tristan for PvP ? I am only currently able to field 3 combat drones...
do i give him buffer armor tank ? ancillary armor tank ? rail guns and a long point ?

how would i combat a game camp if i don't run ? i assume i try shooting the drones first ? or try to get the destroyer down or out of range from me ?

thank you all in advance for reading my wall of excited text ! and for your feedback !

Grats on your first 1v1 kill! There is few things better in EVE than the rush of starting out with PvP, especially 1v1. In time the feeling will begin to subside, but never entirely go away. You'll begin to stay calm in the fights, make more logical decisions, and progressively get better as you learn the ships, their strengths, and weaknesses.

In terms of Tristan, it is a very popular drone ship, and I've normally seen it fit two ways.

- Kite with railguns
- Neut fit

The kite fit is exactly what it sounds like. Keep at a distance, let the railguns and drones eat away at your enemy.

The neut fit works very well against brawling ships, and in fact can work welll against things that use cap in general (active armor, energy weapons, hybrid weapons) and I've had my butt handed to me more than a few times by this fit. You'll cap out an enemy and pretty much leave them helpless while your drones beat them up.

I can't say specific fits, as I've never flown a Tristan myself, and give advice on what kind of tank you would run, but just remember that the best advantage you can give yourself is to play to the strengths of your ship/fit, and your enemy's weakness.

Frigate fights are simply awesome... fast-paced, easily affordable and fun.
I'm glad you've tapped into it so early on, took me ages to get into it!

Always analyze your fights, win or lose. I just look at the Combat Logs and kill report, but you could use the Twitch stream thingy or FRAPS too. After a while, that sense of bewilderment and the how the **** did I just win / lose that?! goes away and you start to get better situational awareness.

As for the Tristan - I hate those little bastards! Damn little hives of stinging misery!
I don't fly them myself, but have lost to them plenty of times. I do know that you'll need to field a full wing of 5 drones to use them effectively.
I'm sure someone with better experience will tell you how to make them kite, neut and generally **** your opponents off! Big smile

Keep at it and fly dangerous!

first off: Congratulations on your first 1v1 kill Big smile

in regards to your questions:

PvP fit tristan -
You can go with stiff armour buffer and close range blasters ( hug him close and melt him before he melts you )
or
You can opt for the kiting rail and long point and let your drones do most of the dmg. This fit will normally use a MWD as opposed to an AB.

The tristan still has a lot of variety for the Gal line-up, including some niche fits like the Neut tristan etc.

If you like it, try different things out and see what works best for you.

The real guiding principle for fitting anything is to decide how you want to fight ( close in, kite with long point, or EWAR heavy ) then fit your ship to your goal. The ancillery Armour booster is seeing some use on the active armour ships because of the bonus to rep power it gives you when overheated.

An example of using this with our tristan would be if you fit an MWD, Scram, blasters and drones and speed mods to burn down other MWD kiters ( google slingshot eve online ) shut off their MWD and melt the little bastards. You will take some damage setting up your slingshot and approach and a good active armour rep can keep you intact until you get them in your scram range.

Gate camps, normally if you want to fight a camp in a frigate, you will try to burn away from the camp as fast as possible. Targeting drones in this case is helpful to reduce the DPS chasing you. You will want to try and pull one or two targets about 80-100km from their gang before engageing ( to close for their fleetmates to warp directly to them ). Other times, you may want to not aggress at all and just burn back to gate. Often you will get aggressed by a few of the gang and may get to have a 1v1 on the other side with their catch tackle ( the guy they send through to scram you if you crash gate ) before the rest of the gang clears their timers and jumps in after you.

Best of luck, I enjoy reading about new PvP adventures so don't be shy about posting here.

EDIT: Google Fail-Heap challenge and look for their piloting in practice threads. Lots of good info there if you can remember that specific fits and tactics may be obsolete when you read them. There is a bunch of neat ideas floating around out there though to get your own imagination running.

Not a Tristan expert, so I'll defer the question to others.

Just wanted to say I really enjoy your reports, as they show a rookie having fun despite losing ships.

Congrats on learning the most difficult concept in EVE, something that many vets never manage to grasp. You'll go far, and have a lot of fun along the way.

If you find yourself in need of additional frigs to lose, give me a shout.

Yep, congratz from me too. Keep'em exploding and keep having fun, that's most important because contrary to what some may say Eve IS a game not a frakking job and you supposed to have fun, goddamnit!

And most important thing: did you enjoy shakes during and after you fight? :)

Some say they go away with time but I'm 2.5 years old and I still have shakes no matter what awaits me at the end of warp tunnel. Be that newbie venture at belt, older BC doing sites, FW farmer orbiting button or bunch WTs. Shakes is what makes Eve great game :)

Agree with Tau, really enjoy reading these and I think they are good for many new players as well.

However, have you considered collecting them all in one thread so it's easy for a new player to follow along from the start and just keep adding to it? Or make a blog and just leave a link here so that new players can find it.

There is a lot of negative stories on this section of the forums (let's gave it, most new people come here if they have a question or problem) so seeing someone who had a good time despite the problems they encounter could be used as an example to new players that feels they are stuck and not getting anywhere.

Keep having fun and keep updating Big smile

Gratz!

With regard to the Tristan fit, don't bother unless you can deploy 5 x T2 Drones with Drone Interfacing IV as a minimum. The Tristan is a drone boat first and you have to have good skills in them. Some pilots don't even bother fitting the highs, preferring to use the extra PG/CPU to fit a bigger plate and generally beef up the tank. Others fit 2 Small Neuts instead of guns and that can be very effective if you can get within 6 Kms of the target.

But.. thank you all so much for the responses.. yes. I am TRUELY enjoying this entire experience.. and even at low Sp.. barely, 2 months.. and only 2-3hrs max per day , I'm having the greatest adventure in my entire gaming life in EvE !

First:

OP, you might want to consider starting a blog about your experiences and time in New Eden. So far, every thread has been a blast to read, specially because I kind of envy the enthusiasm of a new player experiencing all the new things.

About those questions:

Okay, don't even try to ask me about the Tristan, I have between 0.000 and 0.001 experience in Gallente hulls.

About the gate camps though, 2 things:

There is no clear you must use "x" approach to break a gate camp. Because each and every time they are different. It matters:

* Where your ship is located in relation to the enemy / enemies
* Where your ship is located in relation to the gate and other celestials
* Where the enemy / enemies are located
* What ship / fit you are flying
* What ship(s) the enemy / enemies are using.

So a lot of factors define what your base course of action should be and how to proceed.

As for the drones question, yes you can take out their drones. But keep in mind, you either have to kill 5 individual drones, while the rest (and the ships) are still hammering on your tank to break it. Or you can kill the controller and thus take 5 drones and 1 ship off the field in 1 explosion. What should you do, it depends again on the situation.

I am exactly as you see on my bio/ character sheet ? as far as experience in EvE .. i was born into New Eden on November 23, 2013 !

But, i had a very slow start.. it took me over 3 weeks to complete the tutorials AND the Sisters of EvE Epic Arc : "Blood Stained Stars "

i lost 2 destroyers and most of my starter frigates to the last 2 NPCs of that mission arc.. Kristan something. and Dagan. hhehe.

I did not really look for PvP at first.. but I was doing Exploration a lot in High sec.. and sometimes found wormholes to explore.
missions were OK, but i wanted the FULL EvE experience.. danger and mischief, loss and reward. i came here like most of us do.. to the forums.
Found RvB.. and now i live in the area known as THE FORGE , learning, flying, dodging and cluelessly but happily being greeted by weapons' fire everywhere i go ! Bear
The many faces you see who replied to this thread here and countless other threads. answering what must be years of the same questions all us wide eyed newbians must/dare ask , helped me a great deal in my search.
I'm quite happy of what I've discovered here.. and of myself !

Congrats and thanks for sharing with the rest of us your excitement!

My first solo PVP kill was in a Tristan with T1 drones and max drone skills. An Algos pilot undocked from station and demanded someone duel him. I orbited him at max targeting range with AB on, accepted the challenge, and then sent him to pod land without even getting one damage point on my Tristan. Local chat was like "damn, did you see what that Tristan pilot just did!"

Max the drone skills out and you can do a lot in a Tristan. I did all of the Sister of Eve epic arc mission with my Tristan except for the one where you have to kill Dagen. Killed frigates, destroyers, and even cruisers with those drones. Sweet.
