Need high sec L4 advise (returning player)

Hi all, i've been taking a break from the eve universe for almost a year and am now looking to get back into high sec mission running.

I fly tengu and cnr but am looking to move into gunnery as i'm finding the missile boats rather boring now. I also want to open up more ship paths for things like pvp.

I have a few questions so please answer what you can.

-I heard the tengu got nerfed is it still a useable L4 boat or is it a paper weight now?

-I heard hml also got nerfed, should I switch to hams for my tengu?

-I want to move away from missile boats, what's the current top gun boat? (I run in caldari and amarr, i have a lot of points in shield tanking)

I'm not to concerned about training time or cost as i'm looking for a long term goal.

Try Nightmare I would say. Shield and laser. Run missions in Amarr space and you will be fine. You final goal should be a Marauder. Easy and cheap to tank and most missions can be done brain afk.

How does the nightmare stack up vs the tengu?
I'm only a week or two out of a golem should i just spec into one of those to use while i train to vargur?

tengu is a decent mission runner, but it won't compare to a well fit battlehsip, unless that battleship has no prop mod and spends a lot of time slowboating to gates. HAM tengu does great dps while tanking a ton, it loses a bit of time to get into range however, as ham dps is a lot less impressive when you're not using rage hams. You're in the 800-1000 dps range though, which is very nice. HML tengu tanks a ton also and maxes out with roughly 70km range and 678dps with scourge furies if you have max skills, 4 faction BCUs, before hardwires. That's pretty good considering you can tank more or less anything while doing so, but it won't compare to a nightmare when it comes to smacking NPCs. The nightmare has an even larger advantage vs em-weak enemies.

Personally I would take the Paladin over the NM as EM weak rats like to use tracking disruption, which can really shut down a turret boat. Slap a couple of scripted tracking computers on the Paladin and it will even out track the NM in addition to out ranging it.

paladin is superduper now (well unless you are mostly shooting guristas/angels)! if you have caldari/amarr skills now the nightmare should be an easy switch. both are pretty sweet, but I think I have to give preference to the paladin. the marauder boosts just made it that much better. there might be a few short range tracking setups where the nightmare is better, but in missions it doesn't seem like an issue.

a golem is pretty good, if you are that close might be worth trying out. I have missile speed rigs on mine from back in the day, and it is pretty damn nice not having to count volleys out to 100km or so.

I feel like the tengu is just goofy. yea sure it mostly works, but the rof is insane and I always end up wasting volleys.

yes the Tengu still performs well in L4 missions

has good range/dps
has good Omni tank

there are better options, but the tengu is still a reasonable choice

i find myself in a similar situation to you i also hesitate to buy a golem as other than the tank it does the same damage as my old navy scorp but has one less mid slot which im having real problems with TBH (after i fit the stupid jump drive and TP it has quite poor tank without the bastion on).

So im taking some time out and learning turrets while flying a HAM cerb and doing plexes.

Ive read in lots of other threads that the paladin is very good now (borderline OP) so i think thats i good choice.

As I say in every L4 mission thread.

Rattlesnake is king.

It's a drone boat that uses missiles.

I know you want to get away from missiles but this will use both your current missile and shield skills.

It's also the worst gank target of all non T1 BS's and as of this post L4 mission gankers are very active.

You can run omni tank with huge health pool and still have well over 1000 DPS that actually lands.

If you are trying to get away from missiles and use the amarr skill set you are looking at either a paladin or a nightmare both of which are very easy gank targets and cost double a RS and are far less effective in missions.

Top is in the eyes of the pilot. I've used a Rokh sniper setup with a micro jump drive. Takes more attention than a snake or cnr but doesn't drag it out too much. I get more satisfaction blowing stuff up with guns. Seems funner to me.
