How can you be caught on a station?

I keep hearing how people get "caught at a station" in pvp. How does this happen? Can't someone just dock right after they undock if there are hostiles about?

When discussing weaknesses of heavy drones vs fast frigates: baltec1- " A thanatos with a flight of geckos killed a bomber gang while AFK. So yea, they track frigates just fine." https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=4678049#post4678049

Not technically right away. There is a 10 sec session timer in which you cant redock.

But there is also a 30 second invulnerability timer when you undock unless you give your ship any order (only exception is hitting Ctrl+Space to stop your ship).

So...practically you can be completely safe to check the undock...but keep in mind that this doesnt take into account client lag etc.

Also, there are so called kick-out stations who have such a small docking range that you might already be out of docking range before your ship stops.
Pator Tech is one of these iirc.

In most cases when people get caught undocking from a station it is because they attempted to warp off and were tackled before they could align, then either blapped before the 10 sec redocking timer was up, or they attempted to defend themselves, resulting in a weapons flag that would also prevent docking. This can be avoided by having an insta warp bookmark in line with the direction that the station spits you out.

The other way to get caught at a station is when warping in to dock, when you land outside of the docking ring and have to burn in for a few seconds, vulnerable to attack. This can be avoided by making an instadock bookmark within the docking rings of stations you frequent.

When you 'warp to zero' you never exactly warp to zero. It is very common to land just off the station, thus having to slowboat towards it for a little bit. This little bit is enough to get killed. Some sort of size variable is taken into account, almost ensuring this will happen to your pod if you do not use a custom docking-bookmark that is guaranteed to drop you on 0.

There are kick out stations which make it so when you undock you are already outside of docking range. There are also - semi-kick out stations - which make it so that because of the alignment of the gates that you have to turn or move at an awkward angle making you vulnerable as you attempt to warp. Which is why before you dock at a strange station you really should scout it out - especially if you are moving something important like a carrier or a jf. Additionally, insta warps aren't perfect. For instance, you can certainly blap frigs etc with an insta locking nado or something similar even as they try to insta warp - i know cause i have done it and it has been done to me.

I don't play, I just fourm warrior.

Apart from obvious stuff like session timer, kick-out stations and and warping short it's generally a "people didn't bother to learn to figure stuff out because that's for boring people, instead they'll just YOLO it and blame others afterwards".

Caldari Research Outposts are also generally hated for this reason.

Also, no matter how close to the station you are.. if you fire at the other guy you can't dock for 60 seconds after you deactivated the last offensive mod (gun, laser, web, scram, misc ewar).
