What's the 2010 catalyst? New way of handling the API showing different stats, a good campaign, a popularity boom?

In before someone claims this an "eve is dying" thread.

It looks like a glitch: an error in the data, or more likely, a change in the way that the data is reported. Maybe alt creation is included in the graph after that 2010 point and wasn't before?

Maybe Incursions were just that awesome.

the purity of EVE is being ruined by CCP who doesn't enforce one character per player. it's completely absurd that CCP hasn't limited a computer to just one running client, and what's worse is the power of two advertisements that encourage players to participate in this distorted gameplay with more than one character at a time. the advertisement for power of two, the most recent of which ended yesterday (the 5th of january, but is probably still open because broken CCP), ends by promising more productive mining ops; of all the sacrilegious behaviors of people with more than one character, CCP promotes mining. why is CCP trying so hard to ruin gameplay for solo players? this is so frustrating when what i want, what I really really want is to just bring solo back

You mean the jump that happens in 2010?
It's just the the data becoming available through more reliable means than scraping forums and corp listings.

Why you wanna make me run multiple computers to "dual box", because that's all that useless restriction would do lol.

Yes they have. Try running another client with a trial account. You can't. So obviously CCP know HOW to do it, but they intentionally don't. Therefore multiboxers have CCP's blessing (so long as the rules about botting/macros and actually being at the keyboard are followed).

I find it amusing that you wish to cry about this topic. You realize that even with 1 client per computer, there is virtualization software. And then there is the guy who can afford several computers. Why fight it? Instead CCP took the right decision and they monetize it instead. As we say in New Eden - HTFU.

That site was mentioned in one of the WiS threads, leaving me pondering exactly the same question. Having looked back at what kind of content was released at that time, it appears that the surge was caused mostly by the new character editor - basically, lots of people were madly excited about avatars and WiS back then.

This sounds right to me. That kind of instantaneous jump is more consistent with a change in the way the data is counted: i.e. moving from forum scraping to a newly available API call. If it were caused by something organic, like excitement over the character creator, you'd expect a spike with a more natural slope (and then probably a tailing off after the excitement wore off)

Banish plump Jack, and banish all the world.

That doesn't explain why it's been so consistent since then.

It's just a glitch in the data - Might be going from average daily to monthly stats. Only Chribba can tell :)

I don't think it would be the character creator, wasn't that only introduced in January 2011, with a patch for Incursion? Not with Incursion 1.0 at the end of November 2010.

That said, the Incursion patch notes don't say much about anything in the API. Nothing immediately obvious anyway.

However, the Tyrannis 1.2 patch notes, do say a fair amount about changes to the API.

Just the facts.

There was no explosion or similar. That's the time when CCP made changes that enabled me to track any new character created. So while before that time it was more "guessing" new pilots, after that time there was no way of hiding haha (and as you can see, guessing pilots is quite hard hence the huge jump).

what qualifies as a new character, Chribba? do you make a distinction between characters and accounts? new accounts with old characters still get mandatory invites to the rookie help channel. character transfers wouldn't throw that number off significantly after being discounted, but using up all three slots might reduce the significance of those numbers by quite a bit.

what about the number of active accounts registered on EVEboard via API... what does that history look like? it's not an accurate count of EVE's total active accounts, but it's still an accurate measure of something
