There is a girl at work with whom I speak to on a regular basis. I usually talk to her over the phone and on an instant messenger program, but rarely face to face. Our conversations are typically fun and jovial, but sometimes they steer towards more serious, personal topics. When she is shopping and finds items that remind her of me she often buys them as gifts and hand delivers them to my office. I dreamt of her in the early hours of this very morning. In my dream I found her with an injured leg attempting to climb a steep hill, so I helped carry her. I think the symbolism is obvious. I feel like there might be something growing between us, and I feel compelled to encourage it to continue. However, I face a moral dilemma beyond the complexities of dating someone from work in that she is currently engaged. Her fiancé is nice enough, but he is not very accomplished and will likely never be so. I believe this girl is smitten with me because of my personality and position, and may be rethinking her commitment to the man she is currently with. And this brings me to the reason I am seeking the assistance of the EvE community...

I am currently an Amarr pilot, should I cross train to Caldari or Minmitar to make myself more flexible for Null fleet doctrines?

Thank you!

I skipped over the paragraph at first, thinking it was going to be crap I don't care much about, and when I went back to read it I was so surprised. That question depends on what your corporation wants you too fly, make an example of a few ships by name.

Why did you not list Gallente?

The Megathron and it's beautiful lines are the Corvette Stingray of Eve. Once she sees you flying one, her legs will open like its beautiful double-hull.

Gallente have the most skill in common with Amarr, Armor tank and Drones.
Minmatar have some armor tanked boats and missiles that are useful for T2 Amarr.
Caldari just have missiles in common with Amarr but they have a bunch of ridiculously badass frigates.

Train all the races. Get all the ships. Blap the fiance. Loot the Damsel. Elope to null sec. Buy a POS together. Have Drones together. Live happily ever after.

Until you're evicted from your space. Your POS is destroyed by Tornadoes. You're forced to move to an unfriendly neighbourhood; low sec. Where she gets mugged by the locals. You save her Corpse.

This has gone off on a bit of a tangent. So let me direct you here...

You should probably talk to her and make sure you don't have the wrong idea about her feelings for you.

Thank you for all of the guidance from everyone. Each and every reply is appreciated for as you can see I am in a quandary.

I think the suggestion that I discuss my perception of the nature our relationship with this girl is worth consideration, but I don't know that it is the best course of action in this case. I am afraid that doing so at this time would seem presumptuous, and could serve as an impediment to genuine friendship should we find that the paths of our destinies do not intersect with the evolution of a romantic relationship. I don't want to be rigid or predictable, neither in this case nor in my decision on the next race of ships to train. I very much like Gallente ships. I know that their requisite skills marry naturally with those required by the Amarr, so training Gallente would be a logical choice that also suites my personal preference. That said, I want to be seen as a flexible and considerate pilot. If I train one of Minmitar or Caldari then I would have options to participate in either armor or shield fleets, which may make me a more desirable candidate for a great Null Corp. In the same way as I would like to be seen as a desirable companion for this girl, with respectable motivations and noble character. I am not someone who would chose to try force her hand by attempting to alienate or otherwise foster derision towards her fiancé. I value her to much to risk jeopardizing her security in her present situation to satisfy my own selfish impulses. Much like my view of Gallente ships. I want them, dearly. But I can choose to admire them from a distance if it proves to be the most beneficial decision to properly support those with whom I am involved.

So, considering my love for Gallente but my desire to maximize flexibility, upon which race should I focus? Or should I just train sentries so I can potato?

Thanks Love Bugs.

If you're under the impression that a significant proportion of the fleets you're missing are shield fleets then I would suggest training Caldari first. It would take very little time to get your shield skills up and from there you can get the hot girl from work and your fianceé to play together with you by bringing in the Sansha line. As there is no need to train additional weapon systems you can jump right in.
I would then move to the Gallente line for the drone line (not only is it the fastest weapon system to develop, it has a certain vogue right now) most of which can be tanked on either layer, they also combine with your Caldari skills to access the Guristas ships and take your shield/drone doctrines along a different line. And it's well known that Gallente girls are easy...
Finally you can introduce the Minmatar line and, with a few Vindicators in your hangar, get all of the girls.

Because I'm now in a situation not too different from yours, my best advice is to go ahead and find out if she has feelings for you and act on what you find out. Back on subject, though I love gallente ships, I've found myself falling in love with a few amarr drone boats, the neut/nos bonused ones particularly. My best advice would be to dump a bit of sp into amarr and gallente up to destroyers, and find out which drone boats you perfer, because both the Armageddon and Dominion x seem to be popular these days.

Training Minmatar and Amarr will show her you're both independent and daring, a striking combination. Also, Minmatar ships can be armor fitted or shield fitted, giving you the option to train the weapons first so you can fly the ships right away, then train shields later and fly in shield fleets. Also, it is not uncommon to see Amarrian ships fit with autocannons. You train projectile weapons and you open up a world before you. Plus, what kind of woman won't cream herself when she sees you dropping opponents in one shot with artillery?

I don't think that a commitment avoiding race like the minmatar attract girls, and no one is impressed by someone fighting and winning below their weight class. And minmatar weapons are only still popular on cap problematic and non gun bonused hulls, mostly because they take up the least space.

I'll admit some of the ladies out there like men to exude a very crude and unrefined sort of manliness. But many women prefer a man who can deftly sweep her off her feet, and regale her with fascinating tales he has picked up along his travels. Minmatar aren't really the raw fighters or the brazen behemoths when it comes to ship combat. Minmatar prefer to write their own code of honor and fight to win, regardless of how pretty they look or how big their ships are. Some women like a man with a big ship, but some like a man who can gain the upper hand in a fight he didn't start.

Minmatar are always the aggressors when alpha is involved, as it will only hit the ships it can one shot under ideal circumstances, and don't you think thst honor involves not running away from a fight you started, especially when things don't go as planned, something that your average minmatar pilot would never do. I believe that women would perfer a man who would defend their honor, not stall until they can figure out if they'll win or lose. Unlike the amarr and gallente, no one will mention your toughness in battle or the way you defeat your opponent through sheer willpower, but they will remember you whittling down your opponent in a fight that shouldn't have lasted longer than a minute.
