They both seem entirely viable but I'm interested in hearing outside opinions. What are the pros/cons to each? Is one simply better/easier?

Proteus: covert ops cloak, better tank.

Ishtar: Superior ranged dps.

I've used both ships for sansha low-sec exploration, and they are both good. I think the ishtar would have a harder time doing the 5/10 then proteus, but easier time doing the 6/10. Generally i would say the ishtar i better then you need high dps, and the proteus is best when you need more tank.

The fact that the proteus can use a covert cloak, and swapping subsystems is easy in low-sec, makes it better in the more dangerous parts of low-sec. It's also good for doing escalations where you need to travel quite a bit.

I'm a relatively respectable citizen. Multiple felon perhaps, but certainly not dangerous.

I use a proteus for plexing and an ishtar for ratting. Covops mobility options for the proteus better than the benefits the ishtar has as a pure combat ship imo. If you have a scout account, the advantages of a proteus comes down to the ability to pass a small camp unhindered, where the ishtar would have to wait. For single account players, proteus mobility is more important.

The drone fit proteus is also a sumptuous luxury plexing fit. about 750 dps, with 3 rails, probe, cloak, salvager, AND scan bonus, AND T2 resists for serpentis and gurista, AND the myrmidon style rep bonus, AND cruiser signature and speed, and a midslot free to either dual prop or web or eccm, or sebo, or you can have 7 lows if you prefer. Ishtar fits are usually relatively spartan.

The travel fit works pretty well in lowsec where a nullifier is not necessary, and a depot is not necessary because of all the stations. It has trouble fitting everything for escalations in null with a depot, because drones are big. as are cloaks, as are subsystems. Doesn't matter so much for a gypsy trip to null where you'll commit to cargo expanders and not have to commit to a particular system where it will be necessary to scoop the depot in a hurry.

I used to do serpentis 5/10s all the time with the ishtar, but I would prefer not to do the gurista 5/10 with an armor ishtar because range doesn't work as well as it does in the serpentis 5/10. The only thing that will bother an armor proteus in gurista or serpentis plexing is neuts.

Thanks for the help. What would a 5/10 proteus fit look like?

I am using

[subs]
emergent locus analyser
nanobot injector
augmented capacitor reservoir
drone synthesis projector
gravitational capacitory

[high]
3x200m railgun II
sisters expanded probe launcher
salvager I
imp cloak II

[med]
2x Omnidirectional tracking link II
1x eccm II (I'm in gurista space)
1x 10mn experimental mwd

[low]
1x corelum c-type med repairer
1x kinetic armor hardener II
1x thermic armor hardener II
3x drone damage amp II

[rigs]
3x CCC I

[drones]
4x garde II
4x warden II
5x lights

heaps of variations available on that fit though - even different subs (rails and 6-3-7 layouts both work). If I was fitting up a new one (after I inevitably lose this one), I'll probably use faction Omnis, and a t2 rep (that's a parts box example I've had since 2010 - has to go out and die sometime!). I believe an AB fit has enough spare cpu to fit a DLA instead of the salvager, or you can use faction hardeners to save cpu. Keep a covops cloak and a covops sub for travel.

ishtar has a nice cargo space, and you can have your whole fit be less than 250m. Plus in lowsec you can fit stabs/mwd/cloak and travel relatively safely because there's no bubbles to get you. Plus, once you're in the site, its flat-out superior in terms of damage, application, effective range, everything.

"**CCP is changing policy, and has asked that we discontinue the bonus credit program after November 7th. So until then, enjoy a super-bonus of 1B Blink Credit for each 60-day GTC you buy!"**

Never forget.

I would take ishtar any time. After HAC rebalance you don't even need capacitor mods anymore and can fill mids with omnis making your gardes track and reach vvveeery well.

Doing mwd/ab + cloak on it in lowsec is pretty safe really and the only thing proteus adds (for me) would be more lowslots (making gank sorta same with sentries - but currently ishtars are the thing for sentries), scanning bonus (dont need it) and cloaky warping (dont really need it).

Outside the 'natural habitat' of gallente t2 resists maybe the proteus could be better, but then you would probably be better off with a different tech 3.

Running expeds i still have this put-together t2 proteus and it has worked very well.

I guess if you really don't want to have a (temporary) base and want to do expeds, too, then the prot would be better.
