How about adding a symbol/marker next to the player's name in local chat that shows they are in the same grid with you?

This would allow players docked to know if someone is outside of a station if that player is not on the station's guest list.

Agreed, enhancements to local are not good.

How about all of you finally give up on this WiS idea...

It'd probably be easier to have a short range D-scan button in the station tabs. Limited to about 100-200km radius around the station. You can still get your surprise ambushes in with sniper fleets, but tackle on un-dock is much more difficult. Since the D-scan requires a click and a (relatively!) simple query, it shouldn't need a lot of server processing.

Label it as Docking Perimeter Scan, and put it in the Station services window. Still needs players best judgement ("Does that Badger have a warp scrambler on it?"), and will get more people to attempt un-dock if there's a station camp... since they can decide to bring out the big ships.

This isn't 'free' intel.
This is basic information that should be accessible to pilots.
And it's only CCP's poor mechanics that when you are docked in a station can't feed you any information about the grid said station is on that prevent that occurring, since it treats you as in a totally different location.

Oh... but you are. You're in the station (ergo, you're not in space... ergo, you are not on grid)!

That said... you can always undock, see what is outside, and redock before your invulnerability timer runs out (~30 seconds or activating a module or altering your ship's course... whichever comes first).

Unless it's a kick out station, or you get bumped or or or......
When you should just be able to duck your camera drones out the hanger door for a quick look. If nothing else.

Hopefully this is something that Brain in a box can affect, as it's a coding issue at present.
