killing drones in pvp

Hi,

i was wondering of the best way to kill drones in pvp.

i seem to be having the most sucess warp scrambling and webbing the drone (when im in a frig)

but does the wrp scambler actually work on the drone or should i just keep it on my main target?

I'd keep the warp scram on the ship, otherwise it can just escape.

Drones cannot warp away, and even if they could, it'd be too much micromanagement and they'd easily break apart mid-warp. You need to keep your warp disruptor/scrambler on your prime target, and let any frigs deal with them.

Webbing isn't too much of an issue, but if you're fighting frig, keep the web on them, otherwise web the drones.

Keep your scram/disruptor on your actual target. Whether or not to web the drone will be situational...are you faster than your enemy without it? If so, it is an easy choice, web the drone. Are you slower than your enemy without the web? If so..that becomes a risk/reward evaluation you have to do rather quickly.

But generally...if you want to end up with a kill, keep your scram on your enemy. =)

i mostly fight in small gangs so one of us will likely already have a scram or a point on teh target.

What im really asking is does scramming the drones shut off their microwarpdrive and thus slow them down - if it has no effect then ill just keep my scram on the target.

This is the problem with asking questions in eve. For some things there are straight 'right and wrong' answers. In this case, there really isn't.

Scram serves a vital purpose vs. drones, shutting off their MWD. If you are fighting (for example) a kiting-based drone ship that is trying to stay away from you, scram/webbing the drones can allow you to kill one or two before they are able to recall them. Web alone would not suffice in that example.

In most fights, letting the scram off your opponent isn't the end of the world. They are worrying about all sorts of things just as you are, and probably won't be focused on escape if they think they can kill you. Sometimes you don't need to scram at all if you "bait tank". Your enemy will get greedy tunnel vision and not bother trying to escape.

Ultimately, shooting drones is dependent entirely on situation and there is no 'right answer'.

Eram has it. A scram will shut down a drone's MWD meaning they can't move as fast when trying to use a MWD but that MWD isn't always used.

It is not used by a drone if it can hold it's orbit around you while shooting - only for closing, recall by the owner or getting back in range - usually from drift due to combat (pulsed style) if they get out of range.

ah ok so they use to to get to you and then they turn it off?

so if his drones are already orbiting me i should just keep my scram on the target and web the drone.

You've got the right idea but it's not so black and white.

Different drones have different speeds. Your speed, and their speed will determine whether they have to pulse MWD to keep in an orbit.

So, again, it's entirely relative depending on the situation.

Pretty safe to generalise and say that for most instances, a web will suffice. Some, though, you may need that scram.

edit: to further complicate the situation, if for example you had a drone webbed, and that caused it to drift out of orbit range, forcing a MWD activation, the signature bloom from the MWD would cause you to do a little more damage briefly, while the MWD is active. This is all excessive levels of thinking though, the point I'm trying to make is that all situations are mutable.

Should attacking the drones be automatic or sometime you should keep focus on target with your dps and ignore the drones?

Depends on the fit your flying, and on the drone skills and ship/fit of the target
Depending on the ship & the number of DDA's fitted, drone dps can vary quite a bit

my dps from 5x Hobgoblin II :-

Basic Tristan (no DDA's) is ~95
Ishkur (2 DDA II) is ~140
Ishtar/Gila (2 DDA II) is ~210

if you can't tank upto 210 dps, then you need to remove that dps asap

with my skills a Hobgoblin II has 1060 raw ehp (before resists)
mwd's at 6300m/s and orbits at 660m/s



other people will get more dps than me, I don't have gal-drone spec 5
most drone ships have sufficient bay space for multiple flights of light drones, so killing just 5 wont accomplish that much
a Gila can carry up to 80 light drones

If you are solo, this is one of the hardest decisions in PVP.

If you are actively tanked and against one opponent in a drone ship, I would usually shoot the drones until your tank no longer needs to be overheated to cope. If you are buffer tanked, I would usually focus on the ship. This changes if you are against a ship you expect has a lot of spare drones such as an Ishtar, unless you suspect it has a lot of drones that are not relevant to the encounter, such as a flight of long range sentries.

I do not have enough experience in flying active burst tanks (Ancillary Shield Booster or Ancillary Armor Repairer) to give an answer there.


Against two targets, focus fire on whichever ship you can destroy fastest in almost all scenarios and ignore drones.


If you are fleeted, you can consider assigning one person with high alpha (i.e. they do a lot of damage in one hit then have a slow reload time) to work through drones if you feel it is required.
