Undocking delay

I've a question regarding undocking from a station -- is there not a delay or period of time in which my ship would be immune from attack, to give my computer & internet connection time to transition from one screen to the other?

I ask because yesterday someone was sitting outside a station in 0.4 space shooting ships as they undocked -- I was in an Imicus, and it seems his one shot blew up the ship. Back to my question: as I undocked, my screen had not even completed loading the HUD, etc. and I was already being ejected. Is this an indication my computer is way too slow/under-powered to play this game effectively? I have nearly all the graphics settings set to low/medium. How am I able to react to an attack when someone sitting outside the station can see/target/shoot my ship before my computer finishes the transition from inside to outside?

My processor/memory: AMD Athlon II x2 240, 2.80 GHz with 5GB of RAM. A new computer, upgrading this one, etc. is not an option. So with this machine am I doomed, LOL? Sad

Thank you for your time and assistance.

When you undock you have an invul timer that lasts until:

The time runs out - 60 seconds
You give commands to your ship (so warp, change of course etc) - the only exception to this is Ctrl-space to stop your ship.

The loading issue, it can be possible that your processor or GPU is on the lower end of the requirements.

Thank you for reply/information -- I knew there was a timer when I went through a gate, but in this instance my computer/internet connection, etc. must be really lagging or misfiring -- does the 60 second timer begin when I click undock? My computer takes approx. 10-12 seconds to change to the outside view after I click undock. I've tried it during busy times, at trade Hubs, and in places where I am only one in local, and the time is usually within a second or two of 10 -12 seconds.

I must have hit warp without thinking as I was undocking, because the 10-12 second delay I see on my end should not have used up that 60 second window. Ah well, live and learn I guess. I probably need to start looking for a better computer setup. Or more accurate to say need to start saving money for better computer

Thank you for your time and assistance.

The changing between station interior and space that takes about 10 seconds...it's the covert loading bar.

To add to J'Poll's excellent response, one thing I have learned. When I am "walking in station", the load time into space is significantly longer than when I am ship spinning in station. I would suggest to you to before you exit station, be sure to exit your captain quarters first. Get into ship spinning mode then exit station.

And on the exit station note, be sure to setup Instant Undocks. The idea with instant undocks is youcreate a safe warp to spot directly in front of the undock, then from there you warp to your destination. If you don't have instant undocks and warp directly to your destination from undock, you stand the chance of the station blocking your path causing you to re-align, align, re-align, etc. leaving you quite vulnerable on the undock.

Unfortunately, J'Poll's response has the length of the immunity timer wrong. It's 30 seconds.

There are 3 timers involved:
When you click "Undock", there is a 5-second countdown during which you can still abort it.
After that, you actually undock and there is a 30 second invulnerability timer and a 10 second session change timer.

So, you are invulnerable for 35 seconds after clicking the undock button (5 seconds for the countdown and then 30 seconds in space). However, as J'Poll said, you lose the immunity if you do anything but stopping your ship.

The 10 second session change timer is important if you want to re-dock because you don't like what you see in space. You cannot redock during the session change timer, so you have to wait for those ten seconds before hitting dock. This timer also starts after the count-down, so it's 5+10 seconds after you hit the "Undock" button. If you want, you can tell the game to show you the session-change timer so that you know exactly when it ends. It's somewhere in the options, but I forgot where. (And AFAIK, you can not tell the game to show you the invulnerability timer.)

Yeah.

When I posted I wasn't entirely sure if it was 30 or 60 seconds.

Thanks for fixing it for me.

Another thing that can cause severe issues with this is the latency that is inherent with Satellite-Internet.

I've recently moved across the country and have to deal with Satellite-Internet until the cable company gets around to running the cable 700m down the road, and 150m up my driveway.

Because of the latency (or lag) involved with Satellite by the time I actually undock and can see stars/objects and my overview has completely loaded the 30 second invulnerable timer has already run out. If you are on satellite this could be your problem, or part of your problem.
