Why DO sentries move at 1 m/s?

Didn't they always do this?

I'd speculate it's because to dock and undock the drones need a not zero speed stat.

This is what I have always assumed as well. Mostly because the only other mechanism to get them into the dronebay is to "scoop" them, which seems to be a separate action than the return command.

Or that some calculations doesn't (always) work (correctly) without a known motion vector.

CCP Greyscale: As to starbases, we agree it's pretty terrible, but we don't want to delay the entire release just for this one factor.

Without moving, they would not be pointing toward their target as they should be, and it would just look awful? Drones don't have swiveling turret graphics.

There was just a thread about this

I would theorize it is similar to the same reason you need to be moving for the MJD to work.

That's my understanding of it as well.

I know it is not as simple as it seems... but I wanna know why it would be hard for CCP to just put turrets on drones? I am guessing their models are just too small or something.

The sentry drone is just a weapon, effectively the whole thing is the turret, it's a wonderful simplicity

Might be because of server load in big battles. Imagine 5 drones, each with 2 little turrets, now multiply by a few hundred to (in the really big battles) a few thousands.
I can hear the serverhamsters screaming for mercy already.... They already do that with normal drones deployed, so no need to pester the poor serverhamsters even more!

It wouldn't be any different server-side than it is now.

Why do people have such a hard time understanding that graphics aren't done by the servers, at all?

That's probably it. Drones are tiny compared to the caliber guns they are equivalent to. In addition, remember that whenever you add one turret hardpoint to a ship/model, you need to add another, since just one hardpoint has no way of covering the full spherical field of fire around the ship/model. There are few drones that have enough room / appropriate geometry for fitting two turrets.

Also, remember that drones have built in "guns" into their model, and they actually fire from those guns. It's like the old Drake with its built-in missile launcher models. Unfortunately, all drones except the sentry drones generally aren't heading towards (and thus pointing at) their target, and you end up with weird instances where the drones fire physics-defying shots perpendicular to their gun barrels.

Drones are the only weapon system that has not undergone shiny-ification in the latest few years. I hope they'll see some of that soon.
