Give Mining barges a utility high slot.

The barges at the moment are restricted to their number of strip miners through the number of high slots they have,

Why not make the mining lazors / strip miners "turrets" give the barge's their designated No. of turret slots, Procurer -1, Retriever - 2 and Covetor - 3. (same for their t2 versions) so that their mining roles stay the same.

Then give them 1 additional high slot, For a cloak, or a neut or a smart bomb. Just something else (options are limited as fitting is pretty tight).

Perhaps this bit of versatility will see them being used more often for lowsec mining and in wh mining again.

As it is they are pretty defenseless and they dont look very attractive for anything else other than high sec.

o7 dringy.

While it could be nice to have a utility high on a mining barge. Do you really think they have the onboard CPU/PG resources to fit any excess gear? Especially a cloak, those eat CPU, which your mining upgrades eat too. Actually it might not be too unbalanced, You become a really crappy miner at the cost of being able to barely defend yourself.

But in the case that you really need to defend yourself in a miner. couldn't you just fit out a good ole Rokh miner or an Apoc miner?
They mine like 60-70% what a hulk can do, last time I checked. But you have the battleship tank, and any amount of utility highs you want, vs mining lasers you fit.

... I live in nul and wh space... both of which... you rarely see mining. - especially not in wh space anymore sine the ore sites were moved from signatures to anoms making taking a barge out almost a death sentence.

Please be constructive. or go troll someone else's thread.

Yeah the fitting is very tight, I havent actually run the numbers on a battleship mining ill have to give it a go!
Its not so much about defending yourself as an ability to evade / save yourself... Even if in wh space seeing a target warp into the anom, being able to cloak or nuet out the interceptor might give them a little bit better survival rate.

the fitting is an issue, but like you said... they could be tweaked to work as a trade off. (mining upgrades vs say a cloak)

The barges... to me... seem too centered around safer regions. The skiff used to be a great with its 2+ warp strength, but they stripped that (and the mexeroite bonus - however its spelt :P) . It was s ship with a bonus to Nul / wh areas of space! either bring back some similar style bonus's or perhaps allow some more versatility with the fitting,

There's nothing to stop you dropping a strip miner to gain your utility high slot. (except on the procurer and skiff ofc, which only have 1 slot to begin with)

Other than the huge loss in mining yield...

If you have a POS in system, the boosts from an Orca or Rorqual more than compensate for the loss in mining yield. A maxxed out rorqual gives just shy of a 100% boost to mining yield. You have to ask yourself what is going to cost you more ISK: a reduced yield or losing your ship.
