This. I recall reading a dev blog way back when where this was explained. I have some hazy recollections that the same algorithm/system/program actually was used to also decide the number of planets, moons, belts, and stations in systems and also the connections between systems.

I believe the "thingies" you're referring to are called syllables. ;)

I KNEW that had to be the case! Some of the damned system names are pretty much unpronounceable because they have awkward extra letters thrown in. I assumed they were either some sort of icelandic weirdness or random generated.

Coincidence? A bunch of the Caldari names mean something in Finnish but I don't think there's any conspiracy to be found behind it all.

Region names are I believe all hand-picked; the drone regions were actually named largely based on player input.

Ship names are all names of a real thing (Hel, for example, is one of the old Norse gods).

Expansion names are the result of about three months of arguments every time :P

Made up by a Sysop? :p

they were named from what they were at the time of their discovery, when you think about it it's pretty logical.
these were entrance to new eden, and so were called as it

amarr : religious beings/things
caldari : creatures, largely birds
gallente : greek mythology
minmatar : norse mythology and some storms, but the storms may be something in norse mythology that I just don't know about.

Really, seriously wtf:

Rens

Etherium Reach

Sobek-Re

Emphyran Age (Or however you spell that)

Bei

Venal

Amarr, Minmatar, Gallente & Caldari

Ferox

Hel

etc, etc............

Seriously wtf.

CCP, I recommend you divert resources from the naming department to other things; these names are far too creative & obscure for us simple gamers. Who makes these things up/finds these? Did someone actually sit down and just go to work finding these?

(On a serious note, the naming conventions for everything in this game make me happeh)

I've heard there is a system called Vaajaita, I'm really keen to pilot my Thorax into it but so far I've only managed to push up as far as Ainalle. I'm hoping I'll be able to nudge up the Vaajaita pipe soon. Don't get me started on Cumemare - that's just disgusting.

Gallente feature all sorts of mythologies. Taranis is a celtic deity for an example and there are a fair few ancient Babylonian and Sumerian gods in there as well such as the Ishtar. They are not strictly bound to Greek mythology although it features prominently.

Minmatar feature Norse mythology heavily, but also various cutting weapons (Claymore, Scythe, Broadsword) and ferocious animals (Wolf, Jaguar). Not to mention weather phenomena (Cyclone, Tornado, Tempest).

Caldari also includes some mythological beasts, such as the Chimera, Wyvern and Manticore.
