TQ does not require a basis in sci-fi to have some good inspiration behind it:

On July 20, 1969 at 4:18 p.m. EDT, the Lunar Module landed on the Moon.

EVE seems to be inspired by all the different si-fi shows and maybe movies. The Sansha seem somewhat like the Borg, Blood Raiders reminded me somewhat of the Reavers (mostly because their ships were both covered in blood.) And I'm sure there are many others I can't remember because I'm tired, anyone have any others?

so you know how the Culture novels have Orbitals, giant space habitats hosting billions of life forms shaped like a 3-million-km diameter ring?

plz let us build those in the forthcoming expansions!

A bit further back actually ;)

"Mare Tranquillitatis was named in 1651 by astronomers Francesco Grimaldi and Giovanni Battista Riccioli in their lunar map Almagestum novum."

CCP Greyscale: As to starbases, we agree it's pretty terrible, but we don't want to delay the entire release just for this one factor.

Oh come on...really? Theres only like...2 things that CCP took from that... and nobody uses the Eagle.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

CONCORD is totally based on Alliance from Firefly.

"We blow stuff up and ask questions later."

And the way we play is also based on Firefly.

I'm pretty sure the entirety of EVE is Firefly.

There are quite a few of those loose relations in EVE. Bonus points for the one who can name the sci-fi series that inspired the name of our London Server (Tranquility) Twisted

Tranquility: Independent bitek habitat germinated by Crown Prince of Kulu, Michael Saldana? From Peter F. Hamiltons "Night's Dawn Trilogy"

This is correct. It is actually also based on the name of one of the alien ships in the Gap Cycle. The Gap Cycle is also the inspiration for a well known drug in the EVE-verse. Bonus bonus point if someone knows which Smile

I read those books back when the fifth novel was published so my memory is a bit hazy. I did enjoy how little time passes in those books and think they are best read back to back.

I always feel that Eve most resembles Lois Bujold's Vorkosigan/Wormhole novels that statement in the Second Decade book about not using aliens is almost identical to one Lois has made.

Quote:
Bujold has said that this was a deliberate choice of hers - rather than having lots of aliens, she plans for humans to modify themselves so that eventually the aliens will be us.

Also how the human race, due to the lack of aliens, needs to be divided into major Empires like the feudal Barrayans, the progressive Betans, and the aristocratic Cetagandans.

Also the systems are linked by a large network of wormholes, although this isn't that unique of an idea does play a major part of the series.

No. Babylon 5 had real physics.

Looking to talk on VOIP with other EVE players? Are you new and need help with EVE (welfare) or looking for advice? Looking for adversarial debate with angry people?

While Eve was clearly influenced by other things than just B5. There are points where clearly it is. Most of the influences I've seen have been things where if you look into Sci-Fi throughout it's history there are common ideas that repeat. If you look at the Sci-fi art of the 50's through the 70's clearly the art department has looked at a wide variety of sources. However, they also come up with some great ideas that are all thier own. Sometimes though you just have to wonder. I've always thought the Mackariel looked very similar to the G'quan Heavy cruiser.

Machariel

Narn Heavy Cruiser

But, since we're on the subject I just want to add that to me one of the greatest things about Eve is the tension that has been captured between the Optimistic futurist Sci-fi cannon and the Dystopian world. Both of Sci-fi's faces are present and in conflict here in Eve.

Imo the Dystopian world is being pushed a bit too much vs the Optimistic futuristic sci-fi.

Just look at one of the last dev blogs about Rubicon.

It explicitly talks about Empires being soft of terrified by capsuleers and of capsuleers going once again to play their own scheme, often quite nasty ones.

There's never a mention about a capsuleer who wants to be benevolent towards the "mortals", donates them something, does something positive for the many populations that have no say and little responsibility for what the Empire leaders decide or do.

If this was a more realistic game, I'd spend my days making worlds flourish.

Considering how one ISK has a large value for planetary currencies, I could improve hundreds of planets with no effort.

But I can't do that. EvE's "famous freedom sandbox" greatly hampers people who try being good.

Sure, it's possible role-playing or playing the "meta" game and I do what I can (see these days, the PLEX for good charity drive and stuff, is shows I want to do constructive things!) but it's totally unsupported by any game mechanic.

We lack of some very basic things, i.e. if I *want* to NOT scam, there's not a single way to prove it.

Now, it's not really a problem for me, as I am known enough that I can start a 100 billion fund and people send me money but I don't find it's fair to only have an handful of "known trusted" players in the game.
Sandbox tools should be present to let everybody "play the good guy" if they wanted to do so.
