Nice! Welcome to Eve. Pirate

Now go shoot more things, or join some of us naughty pirates in lowsec (or some of the even naughtier people in nullsec).

Don't be a party pooper. The first kill (especially solo) is a big deal. My first solo kill was killing a shitfit Punisher in my Rifter (back when Rifter was frigate god), and even though looking back it's not really a notable kill, it's still special.

Congratulation, don't let the troll take it from you, he misclicked and should be in GD.

You just won EVE for the first time, keep going and many more victories await.

The kill was in a system with sec status > 0.4 which means the fight was either a suicide gank, an attack on a flagged player or a duel. In the scheme of things these are relatively controlled circumstances and probably not as hazardous to the attacker as a kill in low or null and therefore not as impressive. However, as others have pointed out, Obunagawe has made little to no effort to consider the context of the kill and its relevance to you and your eve career. So, this gets my congratualtions too, now make your way to Kador losec where my main and his friends might just pounce. Twisted

Empire refers to hisec, or the regions protected by concord (0.5-1.0 system ecurity status). According to some high and mighty people, "real PvP" can't happen in hisec.

Here's a quick overview of how system security works, which should explain why that perception is a thing. "Criminal" actions incur you one of two "Crimewatch" flags: suspect, and criminal.

Suspect flags last 15 minutes and let all the players in Eve shoot you. Upon acquiring a suspect flag (at the very moment), NPCs such as station and gate guns will also fire at you. If they didn't see the act, or if you come back later, though, they leave you alone.

Criminal flags also last 15 minutes, and incur all the above penalties, with the addition of CONCORD coming to kill you. Evading CONCORD is a bannable exploit, so you will die.

Hisec (0.5-1.0)

  • Suspect flag - Incurred by a variety of "illegal" and unfriendly actions, such as taking from someone's jetcan/wreck, remote-assisting another criminal, etc.
  • Criminal flag - Incurred by shooting (or otherwise aggressing) an invalid player target. Valid targets are: people at war with you, people with -5 or below sec status, people in a limited engagement with you (have shot at each other in the past 15 minutes), people in a duel with you, and people with suspect/criminal flags.
  • Heavy security status loss occurs upon receiving either of these flags.
  • Other hisec caveats - No combat-capable capital ships (freighters are the only allowed capitals), no black-ops cyno hotdrops, customs police that scan your ship for illegal goods (drugs, slaves, etc), overall lower income/rewards due to low risk, you get automatically shot by faction police (not CONCORD) if your sec status gets too low.
  • tl;dr: Limited PvP under strict rules. Restrictions usually drive PvPers to other regions of space.

Lowsec (0.1-0.4)

  • No more CONCORD - No more unavoidable game mechanic enforced penalty for crimes.
  • Suspect flag - Incurred by the same illegal actions as in hisec. Gate/station guns will shoot you they see you firing the first shot at an illegal target, but they forget about you as soon as you warp elsewhere. Causes minor security status loss
  • Criminal flag - Incurred by blowing up an illegal target's pod. No real penalty besides being stuck in lowsec or below for 15 minutes until it expires, since CONCORD will blow you up as soon as you enter hisec. Causes serious security status loss.
  • Other lowsec caveats: No titan doomsday weapons. Slightly better income due to higher risk.
  • Faction Warfare: There are some ongoing skirmishing wars managed by NPC factions militias (Minmatar+Gallente vs Amarr+Caldari). This provides ample opportunity for both PvE and PvP, with amazing income potential.
  • tl;dr: Mostly consequence-free no-worries PvP, much of it being between people who were already looking for fights. Friendly to independent small corporations. This is where my alliance lives right now.

Nullsec (0.0)

  • No more law - The only time you will get shot by NPC sentry guns is if you shoot a NPC station.
  • Suspect flag - Does not happen.
  • Criminal flag - Does not happen.
  • Security status loss - Does not happen.
  • Legal targets - Everyone and everything.
  • Warp disruption fields (aka "bubbles") - Nothing inside these huge bubbles can warp away (with exceptions for some T3 cruisers and soon to be interceptors). These bubbles are generated by either stationary deployed mini-structures, interdictors, or heavy interdictors. If they are on grid (visible) next to somewhere you're warping to, and your warp "line" intersects them, you will also be sucked in instead of landing where you intended. Travel requires caution/intel.
  • Bombs: Bombers can activate bomb launchers here, doing huge damage in an area of effect. Keep your microwarpdrive off if you see a bomb.
  • Player Sovereignty: Most of nullsec can be (and is) claimed by player entities. There is always warring and conflict going on around this.
  • Other caveats: Nullsec (particularly in sovereign regions) strongly favors organized mid-to-large-to-very-large sized groups. Lots of PvP, but a lot of it is asymmetrical (hunting the enemy's weaker PvEers, luring them into traps, etc). Can involve lots of responsibilities and weird politics. Income potential is very great, but the effort involved is far from trivial. This is where most super-awesome Eve stories in the news come from.

W-space (0.0)

  • W-space, or wormhole space, can only be reached by entering a wormhole that leads to "an unknown location" (or similar).
  • Just as lawless as nullsec, but with no stargates and no stations.
  • Local chat player list does not work; you don't know who else is in system with you.
  • Income potential is spectacular, but difficulty and risk are very high. Somewhat friendlier to smaller groups than nullsec is. Some PvP, mostly centered around control of valuable systems and resources.

Of course, I have overlooked a bunch of things for the sake of... um... brevity. Hope this helped anyway though! Let me know if you have any questions.

Confirming that empire kills are awesome, well done. There are always trolls hanging around on the forums trying to belittle the play styles of others. It is best to ignore them. Enjoy your bounty. For most players, your bounty is how you keep score. The higher it gets, the more likely that you are winning.

Nice kill new guy!

For future reference though, it is considered bad form to post kills on the forum. The only place that it is allowed is in the Pirate Stories Thread where you can also post chat logs (as long as you change the victim's name) for our maximum enjoyment.

Please do have a read and share your story. But that said... inb4 lock Big smile

I don't think it will be locked, most likely your friendly ISD will just remove the killboard link so everything is according to rules again.

Don't go to null alone. Join up with a corp that can show you around and provide support. When I started playing I moved out to null when I was 2-3 weeks in, and I only made it because everyone in my corp was super-helpful

Good job! The first kill is always the most rememberable! In time you will lose plenty of ships but gain some pretty fantastic kills too. Who knows someday you may be able to get on a Titan or Supercarrier kill, and then you will be really happy Lol

I once podded myself by blowing a huge fart.
