Guns over Missiles or Vice Versa

I've always heard to go for guns vs missiles when it comes to PvP. However, I don't see that this is true being that missiles never miss, and you can't slow their tracking speed, and the only true defense are defender missiles and distance. I know that a small sig radius makes it harder for missiles to give out full damage just the same as guns with slow tracking but, wouldn't say, using rapid lights or heavy assaults loaded with the T2 long range missiles be just as effect for hitting frigs just the same as smaller caliber guns? The only diff is with missiles all I'd have to do is swap ammo to deal with frigs and larger targets alike. Why choose guns over missiles?

The textbook reason people will give you is that guns apply their damage instantly. Missiles take some (sometimes a long) time to reach their target. This gives your enemy plenty of time to react and makes coordinated alpha strikes more difficult.

However in practice both turrets and missiles have their uses, and neither is inherently superior to the other.

Horses for courses really. Rapid Light Missiles are getting a buff next week I believe. I have most weapon platforms trained to Tech 2 and I honestly believe that all have them have their raison d'etre.

If you want to hit frigates with missiles - then I would use Rockets (PVE) and light missiles (PVP).

If you want pure punching power for ratting in anomalies/missions then Torpedos for large targets. And for Turrets I would use 800mm Autocannons. Alot of it depends on your SP in the tech tree - and your play style... do you like to get in close and scrap it out or warp to distance and snipe.

I have tin foil hat trained to 5.

Weeell….

The short and sweet of it is that missiles can be wasted; turret shots cannot. Missiles do predictable and semi-constant damage; turrets do statistical damage. Turret deficiencies can be compensated for through proper flying; missiles cannot.

Both are perfectly good for PVP and PVE.

Stealth 'Nerf Missiles' thread.

Seeing as that missiles are in question, its also a stealth 'Nerf Tengu' thread.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

Seeing how Tengus are sold in hi sec and can also fit cloaks, this is also a stealth "nerf hi sec" and "nerf afk cloaking" thread.

Considering RLMLs are getting nerfed and they were the only really effective medium missile system, it's probably a bad time to waste any skill points on missiles unless you've got battleship plans in your future (cruises are pretty awesome now)

Like has been said above - both have their place.

Missiles are consistent damage profiles that you can choose damage types with. They don't miss (though damage can be mitigated in a multitude of ways). The con is that it's delayed damage. Because of that you can have wasted volleys which means wasted time which is brutal. Also because it's consistent there really isn't an upside to damage only a downside.

Turrets are instant damage and based on positioning can increase the damage profile. The downside is that they are literally hit or miss and damage is not 100% selectable (at least not for maximum damage). Also 2 of the 3 turret types hit the cap.

I use both depending on the situation and just to keep things interesting. In either case, its all about adjusting you game play to compliment your load out - in my opinion, missiles are a little bit of easy mode and turrets are a little more management.

Tengus are made with moon goo and WH materials...so this is also a 'Nerf Moon Goo" and "Nerf WH" thread.

Also, since 'moon goo' and 'goons' cannot be said independent of each other, this is also a 'Nerf goons' thread.

And since one cannot 'nerf' goons without saying it..this is also a 'Grrrrrrrr Goons!' thread.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

Since missiles are launched this would actually be a thread begging for more snowball launchers?

There may have been a degree of truth to turrets>missiles a long time ago, but not anymore tbh. At every level of pvp, there are missile boats that can do well. Hell, you occasionally see a raven fleet these days....which is just damn weird. Missile frigs, cruisers, and BS doing solo, small gang, or large fleet are all things that happen.

Except for Phoenix. Never ever phoenix.

Stop derailing the derailment. Now start speculating on what kind of stealth thread this is or we will report you. Big smile

And Goonswarm also deserves some Ishukone Scorpions, much like Somer (didn't). Considering that Scorpions use ECM as a primary weapon, this is now also a "nerf ECM" thread.

Missiles you can activate and not have to worry about other considerations. As long as they are in range, they'll do damage. Guns, you have to take into account alot more factors, Optimal range being the main one. That being said, damage is applied instantly, no need to wait out missile travel-times, and you can deal more damage if you start getting critical hits. Tho, do it wrong, and you can end up applying hardly any damage at all.

So it all depends on how much you want to be thinking about during a fight. Shocked

Post with your main, like a BOSS!

And no, i don't live in highsec.  As if that would make your opinion any less wrong.

As Off-grid boosting is generally used by alts of 'solo pirates', this is also a nerf-alts and nerf-solo-pvp thread.
