Hi guys,

I've been playing eve for a couple of years and I'm thoroughly hooked. Now recently in RL I got voted onto a local charity run community centre for my village. It's classed as a deprived area and we have issues with kids causing bother with nothing to do in the evenings. I'm playing with the idea of running an 'eve after school club' for the kids on the centres computer suite which we are currently trying to grant funding to replace. Has anyone tried running an eve club for kids and does anyone have any ideas about how to get organise it.
At the moment my skeleton plan is to get the kids a free trial to see if they enjoy the game, knock up some recommended skill plans so they can jump straight in and then form a corp to try and keep them together until they are ready to venture out into the wider universe.
I'm hoping they will develop communication skills, learn to work as a group and generally give them something to do other than mugging old ladies. The bonus obviously is that if they have computers at home, and not many do, they can take the game home with them so to speak. So I'm basically looking for ideas, suggestions etc.
Right now it's still in an early planning stage so I'm quite willing to change it around.

Thanks for the help I'm hoping to get?

+1 for a good cause mate.

Not sure how you could fund subscriptions for the kids to keep playing though. You might be able to get some help through player donations for plex but it probably won't be sustainable in the long run.

Hope it all works out

I think giving them world of warcraft or some other MMO which is team based, but not so complicated would have a greater effect.
They will just get frustrated and throw it away.

On the contrary, if they're mugging old ladies now, they have the perfect mindset for EVE.

So true, when I was young the only thing the older guys would do is get us all to steal stuff or climb over fences to get their football back

You would long for the days when you became one of the older guys

I do not see the benefit of getting teens addicted to a MMOG. How about Sports, Music, Culture, History and Science?

Interesting idea, but I think that you'll find yourself confronted with what happens with many new players in EVE... some will really like it, but at least as many if not more won't enjoy it. While it could be a good team building excercise for those who do get into it, you may also create a schism between those and the others. I'd say you might want to think of other activities that are more likely to engage the majority of the kids. Might want to expose them to several different things and see what they want to do?
Anyways, good job for trying to help out, hope it goes well.

I like the idea of corrupting the minds of the young.

You should bring them into the zoo. They can work together and raise enough money for a PLEX. Then, they can pull each other further up until they can pay for their accounts with PLEX, given enough time and skills.

If they can be made to work together and you can show them that there is a place where they can release their inner elohssa without committing class 1 felonies, it's a win for everybody.

At fanfest I have actually mentioned a few ideas like that.

CCP was not wild about the idea of introducing EVE into prison communities, even though prisoners do have time enough for EVE :-)

Use it as a component in a greater set of activities like the above. But don't forget all the aspects of eve like the market and manufacturing. Practical skills they can develop in a simulated environment and possibly extend into real life, excepting the pvp of course :P

Thanks for the responses, the current theory is if we can get the accounts funded through the rental of the internet suite we could then support those who decide to play for say 3 months by which time they can hopefully buy plex and be self sufficient.
I kind of hope they can learn to work together to establish themselves and this may encourage such group dynamics in the real world.
We started thinking of MMO's because we basically have this internet suite with ridiculously fast connection that never gets used in the evenings. While these kids are running riot over the estates.

Its not the perfect solution but if it holds there attention for a few weeks its a start. Working on the principle we can get them to run the career missions to learn the ropes then give them help in training to fit there career choice in game.

I honestly never thought to ask for in game donations but it may be an idea.

Anyway its all just a feasibility study type thing until we finish upgrading the systems.
