Teach me about Stealth Bombers

I just got into Covops because I wanted to do a bit more exploration and thought the Anathema was pretty sexy. While I was picking it up I realized that I had also unlocked Stealth Bombers so I grabbed a Purifier too for the heck of it.

I don't really know much about them though. It was sort of an impulse purchase. Are they only for PvP? What else can I do with it? What level missions can it do or is it horrible for that purpose? What level belt rats can it farm?

Can anyone give me a good fit for it and maybe explain some of the basics of how it should be used and what it is fun for. Also are there any abilities that I should train up to make the best use of it that maybe aren't obvious to a noob? I don't really know much about missiles and the like (I believe I have at least the basics trained up but I'll need to look further into the skills before I actually fly the thing).

Thanks!

They aren't only for PvP. You may do L5's and FW missions using them.

PvP: either PvP in a gang (bomber wing, ask your FC for details), or solo PvP (for skilled and experienced pilots only).

Bombers can't tank very well. They are literally paper tigers. In revenge, they have obscene DPS (for frigate hulls) and enjoy the luxury of revealing themselves when they damn well please (technically, anyway).

Bombing is fun as hell. It's also pointless without bomber buddies as a single bomb won't pop anything but drones or some frigates caught running it's MWD.

The "standard" (if theres one at all) bombing run has 4 steps:
1) ingress
2) decloak
3) launch bomb
4) warp out

...in that order and without delays. Don't hang around to watch the pretty lights, mate. Remember, paper tiger. The "ingress" part is where you approach your mark while positioning yourself in a line with your target and a distant celestial, like a distant planet. You've got to place the target in front of a celestial, forming a line much like this:

[you]----[target]---------[planet]

Superpose them as best as you can. Once satisfied with the positioning, align yourself to the celestial until at 30km from the target and execute ze bombing run.

It's a lot harder to put in words than to do. I hope I make sense...

It knows what you think.

I should say more. Bombs are not guided. They travel 30 km in a straight line directly ahead of you. 15km explosion radius. Velocity of target has no effect on damage incurred. Only signature radius and tank's resistances affect applied damage.

It knows what you think.

You can also run around nullsec ratting too, just make sure you fit a MSE and kill the frigs and destroyers quick before they kill you, the BSes will usually only hit you for 5-10 damage per volley, so long as you're keeping moving they're no threat.

I was under the impression that, if you warped away before detonation, your bomb would fail to damage your target. Is this not true?

You should read my blog
And you should check out my corp

Also a bomb will do damage if you are not on the grid. You can shoot the bomb and warp :)

Good to know. Thanks for the clarification.

It's not just warping off. Last time I tested it, even while I was on grid and aligning to warp "(WARPING)", missiles would fly to their target and mysteriously do nothing.

I can't help but wonder how many tengus have been lost while their pilots desperately tried to kill the webbing frigates preventing them from aligning...all the while watching as their missiles did nothing.

Bombs will explore as long as you are still 1) in system and in space and 2) not dead.

If you jump a gate or dock before detonation, the bomb will turn into a dud. Same if you die.

It knows what you think.

What about torps and cloaking?

Bombers are IHO, the most versatile ships in the game.

They are the $hit....

1. Torp $hit
2. Bomb $hit
3. Scan $hit
4. Recon $hit
5. 0.0 cloaky shuttle $hit (like researched BPOs)
6. Surprise $hit
7. Camp $hit (like jump bridges muhahaha)
8. Cyno $hit
9. AFK troll $hit

And many more.... :D

Hope this gives you some ideas on what to do with your bomber.

Almost the most important thing for bombers in pvp are bookmarks, bookmarks, bookmarks and bookmarks.

One simple tactic is to have an ongrid bookmark about 250km out so you can observe a gate, warp in, align back to the bookmark and fire freely until you need to bug out. Saves you time compared to warping to a celestial and allows you to stay in the fight.

I also believe in the tanked bomber for low sec. They cannot hold up for long but being able to take a couple of medium artillery volleys is important in my opinion.

Whatever EFT says your torpedo's will not hit that far. If its says 65km then you really want to be under 60km for example.

Finally remember objects like wrecks and jetcans can be warped to and can be very useful if you come across a flight while roaming and dont have a fleetmate to warp to.

You can't cloak if anything is targeting you, but if you're shooting and nothing is targeting you, I'm 98.6% sure if you cloak any missiles in flight will not do dmg.

Another fun use: the only ship in game that can warp while cloaked, and has zero targeting delay on decloaking. Given that you're a frigate to boot, with high scan res, they make for a fun disposable first point. Say you find a juicy BS/Capital/Whatever that you want to kill. Well, if he's doing *whatever* aligned, then you have a pretty slim chance of tackling him, even if you have your gank crew waiting one jump/cyno away. However, that little bomber can decloak and point something in just two or three seconds, even an at the keyboard pilot is likely to miss a window of escape that small. Then, while you scan res damp him, he has to lock and kill that teensy frigate buzzing around his head... by which time your backup has arrived.

I'll trade a bomber loss for a T3 kill any day, and twice on Tuesdays.
