Biggest "Near Miss"

Instead of losses this time...

What is your biggest near miss? Capitals escaping in low structure, skillfully evaded ganks, frigate fights won with your guns burning out on the last shot... What incidents really got your palms sweating and a deep sigh of relief uttered?

For me... A few months back I was running level 5 missions in my Nidhoggur, with a friend in a Thanatos, when a Black Legion interceptor landed on top of us. I imediatly called us to bug out, and while he made it... I didn't. As it happened, BL apparently did not have ships in range to execute the gank, so instead Heretic pilots began landing on grid in onesies and twosies, ending up with about 6 combat ships on grid. At this point, I assume I am screwed, multiple points, including an interceptor that is too fast for me to get with anything inluding Warriors and ECM drones... I'm done for. I keep fighting, and manage too push the Heretic pilots out of point range with Fighters and Sentries (they did not have any logistics, and none of the ships they brought had substantial tank)

After perhaps 10 minutes however, (though it felt like hours) the mission rats (what few were left, I had killed the last of the BS rats just before the Inty landed on us), switched targets to the interceptor, forcing him off grid, and dropping the last point on my carrier. I proceeded to tap dance to station, waving my middle fingers at the failed gankers. (while covertly covering the brown stain on my pants.)

And then, more recently, the incident that prompted the creation of this thread... My Bestower, today, survived a high sec suicide gank while on it's way home from Jita. It had less than 400 hitpoints, including structure, remaining when it entered warp. It also had a Legion, along with a full deadspace and faction fitting, worth some 1.3 billion isk, in cargo.

Had a bit of a dust up in lowsec the other day, helping out the coalition bros.

Took a bad fight on a gate, got it from both sides. Took out a few, lost a few of our own, then enemy reinforcements begin to arrive with heavy ewar on their side, and the FC calls for GTFO.

I'm flying a neuting Armageddon, pretty much my favorite ship for fleet activity. I am about 5km off the gate. As the call to scatter goes out, I begin burning to the gate, desperately trying to get away. Scrammed, webbed, jammed, I have absolutely nothing going for me.

My shields go down almost immediately, and my armor buffer starts taking hits. I spam the "jump" button a couple more times, then realizing I am doomed, I sit back in my chair and select a station to warp my pod to once my ship goes poof.

I hear the armor warning. More gunfire blazing at me, I am the sole member of ROC on the field, and the entire enemy fleet is firing.

I hear the hull warning.

And then poof! My ship jumps through the gate. Made it out with 25% hull remaining. In shock, I spam warp to the nearest station, and make it out free and clear before the enemy fleet realizes what happened and comes in through the gate after me.

Made it out by the skin of my teeth. The enemy got our other Armageddon, but from their chat in local, I got the feeling that my escape kinda ruined the fight for them.

Afterward, shipped down to a Condor, and proceeded to loot what they left on the field, including a big pile of T2 drones, during which the foe attempted to drop on me once again, but a Condor with a T2 AB wasn't to be caught that day.

One of ours, ten of theirs.

Back awhile ago 24 hostiles came into my old alliance system talos,scimiys/some tackle ships a solo brutix decided to go take em on, so i undocked in my nidhoggur to give him reps, but i was quickly bumped off station, i immediatly called carrier tackled in alliance and on ts, a friendly thanny undocked to give me reps. still panicking the friendly thanny got bumped off stn as well. i wasnt in range to refit to a better tank, but was only half shields being an armor tank it helped alot.

shortly after a friendly small fleet landed on grid, a cyno goes up and supers, and about 12 extra carriers jump in.

the goons take off running realizeing they dont have the deeps to kill that many capitals. with them only getting 1 brutix and few other small ship kills.

My alliance quickly stages a trap and kill and tells fleet members to get ahead of them and trap them. with the goons being trapped and unable to run anywhere, they decided to go balls to the walls and fight.

that was the very first time out of 3 years flying a capital that i got tackled, even tho i wanted to know what it felt like being tackled, and saying *carrier tackled* we had a CTA in an hour anways so it was a good oppurtunity to forum the fleet early ShockedBig smile

This one time.. last year there was a broadcast for a fleet. The call was to bring ships with heavy neuts. Usually that means we're hunting capital ships so I was all over that despite goons stellar record at not being able to hold tackle on supers.

So we traveled about 10-15 systems across the north and waited. I began to get excited because this wasnt like our usuall capital hunting fleets where we get a broadcast that says: Raaawwr! Titans tackled everyone login now now now! Only to have somebody say they got away 2 minutes later.

Everyone was quiet and we waited patiently for about 45 minutes. The FC said we were waiting for a certain 'thing' to happen. The FC starts to get a little bit more excited and we travel a couple more jumps. Then he asks for all interdictor pilots to private convo him.

We wait a couple more minutes and then the FC gets REALLY excited and calls for all dictors and dictors only to jump into the next system and warp to a certain pilot.

One of the interdictor pilots says an Avatar warped off as he was landing. WHAT DIRECTION? WHICH PLANET? The FC excitedly asks. Everybody in! Shotgun all the celestials.. find that titan! So we all jump in and warp to random celestials at varying ranges hoping to decloak this Avatar that is in there somewhere.

Seconds pass that seem like hours and I think I made like 2 warps before somebody cries out: "AVATAR AT PLANET 5 GET OVER HERE!!!"

So we all warp to planet 5 and theres nothing there. Where'd he go? Everyone is asking.. he must've cloaked again.. replies the guy who originally spotted it at planet 5. Everybody spread out.. decloak that titan! The FC says...

It seems like we did this for hours but it was only a couple minutes before someone says: "Guys, hes not in local anymore he must've jumped out." Sure enough I open my map and theres a couple possible cynos nearby he could've jumped to. My heart sank because that was the closest I had been to a titan kill in a year and a half of playing this dumb game.

That Avatar got away but it turns out we were cooperating with another fleet that nobody knew about to fool any spies and they had an Aeon tackled too. I did get on that kill but I'm still hunting the Great White Whale X

I have a Talos that has escaped or docked up in deep structure several dozen times. I still have not lost her.

Roaming with Omen, I got tackled after jumping thru gate. There was a inty and 2 armageddons. I got scrammed instantly.
This time instead of approaching the gate I decide to pull Inty out and give some transversial to geddons at close range. Blasted the inty and im being neuted to hell while still warp disrupted by geddon. Ofcourse since im aggressed at this point, theres no reason to burn towards gate, Im aligning direction away from the pointing geddon while still giving much transversial to another geddon to minimize incoming damage. At this point I was sure that Im just a flying coffin for them.
Im at low hull, burning like a bonfire, aligning to celestial, light drones buzzing around me, and punishing my mouse clicking warp while im still way in range of warp disruption range, im about 10km+ away.. Suddenly Im hitting the warp!

Alots of WTF's flying around I managed to warp away with 2% of hull! I think geddon was so sure about to kill so he shut down the point while waiting that last cycle to come out from his lazors. Too bad, his point cycled out faster than they did the last damage.

I know, nothing much to lose while playing around with T1's, but had the last laugh! ;)

My Prowler has had many many close calls over the years, sadly after 3 years of faithful service, I lost her last month to a misjudgement and overconfidence.

My biggest close call was when I was moving stuff with a Jump Freighter, and contrary to my usual 'max payload' I was carrying around 7B worth of stuff on board, I entered uedama, and there were 30 tornados waiting there on the gate.. I think.. I'm doomed, holding my cloak still, I try desperately to figure out a way to weasel out of this one, when an obelisk decloaks and begins to warp to the other gate, and gets promptly nuked by the tornados, most of them going poof quickly to Concordoken, there weren't enough left for me to worry about and I made it through safely, after offering if they wanted help getting the loot from that obelisk.

I was flying a Navy Vex in a familiar system ratting my sec status. Was on comms with my corp, though most were not in game.

spotted a Malediction on scan, followed by a Drake, then 2 Cats, all from the same corp. I bounce between safes and belts as they begin to look for me. I find the 2 cats in the next belt.

They engage, but have no point. I leave the belt, knowing I cannot take all four, I ask in comms if anyone is Interested. I warp back to station to quickly repair the damage to the ship, and then undock and scan. One of our more experienced pilots logs on in his Megathron. He moves the ship outside of most of the system's scan range while I start to play footsie with the Malediction and Drake, now on a gate.

At my mentor's suggestion, I slowly burn off the gate, the Malediction following along with me. Once out of gate gun range, I grab the 'Diction and pin him down, web, neuts, drones. The drake almost instantly warps to his buddy to help. He goes suspect in doing so.

Within seconds, Our Megathron, as well as their two Cats warp to grid. The Malediction pops about the time they get there. I switch point and neuts to the Drake and put web and drones on the Cats. Megathron puts his DPS on the Drake and drones on the CAts. Drake and Cats all primary me.

The Cats begin to pop, but by now the Drake has been steadily wearing down my tank. The second Cat pops and I am in structure. I begin to align out, hoping the drake will lose his point. Then he goes down. I warp to a safe with 5% hull. Megathron returns to his scansafe.

104M in kills. And a close shave.

That monocle looks ridiculous.

There's no such thing as a "near miss" ?! o_O
That'd be the same as a "near hit", which isn't a thing either ... !? O_o

I once saved 3 capitals from evil russians who wanted to evict us from our wormhole by using a fresh 00sec random outgoing.
The russians had not properly r**e caged our POS and were lasy at scanning so we could warp our stuff out. Just as my last Archon landed on the wh at the same time a evil russian hic landed too, but could not jump through as my Archon closed the wh. Was sort of intense.

I was in NPC Delve, and one of our alliance pilots was outside in a Harby when he reports that there is a Cynabal at staion which is burning towards him and is ahem 2km off the undock, so I undock in a cane and go for it, but he just manages to burn out of the range of my neuts, so realising that I will get kited to death I decide to warp to a safe, I do this as a Vaga and a Munin jump into system, the Harby pilot is still shooting at the Cynabal, to my surprise, he should have deagressed and docked. I call for the others in station to undock and help the Harby, I warp back in and land on top of the Vaga and Munin, I neut the vaga out and blow him up in short order, this allows the Harby pilot to warp out in 2% structure, then we kill the Munin and the Cynabal flees the field.

Another one in NPC Delve, I was hanging outside the station again in a Hurricane when a Goon Arbitrator turns up, so I sort of hang there for a bit doing nothing much expecting it to be a hotdrop which I say in corp. Then one of my corp members logs in, as another asks me what is he in and I reply he is in an Arbitrator outside the station, at which point the corp member who just logged in undocks in a Harby and goes for it. So at this point I go for it too, the Goons must have been surprised because he cyno's in the two carriers a bit late so the Arbitrator blows up and we both burn out of range of the carriers scram and warp away.

Another one, I was in a fleet fight with the CFC when in IRC, on an unsupported node, and I get the white screen, dinner is ready so I decide to leave it hanging in space, I come back after dinner just as the FC announces to burn back to the POS, so I re-log and burn back to the POS and arrive in 10% structure.

When the going gets tough the Gankers get their CSM rep to change mechanics in their favour.

Well I was once going out to low sec trying to find some kills in my wolf, then I stumbled on a system that was camped with cruisers, I also remember that two of them were T3 (one legion and one proteus) so I burned back to the gate, luckily they were using warp disruption rather than scrambling so I used my MWD and burned back to gate, and I didn't believe it but I actually reached the gate!

I survived at half armor or quarter, I don't remember really.
